4 YIELDING MATRIX FOR SOUND-RECORDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed June 29. 1905 Serial No. 267.590-
Matrices for Sound-Records, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to the production of sound-records by the impressing of a suitable matrix into a disk or tablet of suitable Such matrices are electroplates, formed upon a wax-like original so und-rec rd by the ordinary process of electrolysis.
These electroplates are comparatively thin sheets 'of metal which are backed up by I heavy plates to which they aresoldered orotherwise permanently secured. The surface of such matrix is seldom or never a true geometric plane, so that if a composite tablet is to be impressed (to produce th sound record) some provision must be made to com- 7 pensate for this Want of geometric trueness.
My present invention not only rovides this compensation, but also saves t 1e time and expense of providing the heavy backing for the matrix, and incidentally permits a number of matrices to be stored in a small space. My invent on consists briefly in providing a yielding substance between the matrix and the platen, or the plunger, of the press, so as to produce a yielding matrix which -will press with uniform pressure upon every ortion of the surface of the record or disk to which it is applied. I
In the drawings annexed hereto to illustrate an embodin'cnt of my invention, Figure 1 is a conventional representation of a press containing the invention.
Inthe press A is shown a recess containing a sheet of a body B, which is a sheet of. soft rubber, felt, cloth, or any yielding substance.
Upon this body B rests the electropla'te matrix C (a thin sheet of electro-deposited metal).
D represents the-record-tablet, which is to be impressed against the matrix b the plunger E of the press. Of course, t e plunger ormovable part of the press might be the lower member, or both members, might be made to. approach and recede from each other; and, in like manner, the record-tablet may lie at the bottom with the matrix on top of that, and the yielding bod B upon top of that; and also the yielding ody may be interposed between the tablet B and the press, but the best results are obtainable by the construction shown.
Other changes and modifications may be employed, but the spirit of my invention lies in employing in connection with the thin electroplate or matrix a yieldin body between the back of said matrixan the press, so as to dispense with the heavy backing heretofore made integral with the matrix, and to compensate for any departure from absolute trueness of either the matrix surface or the record-tablet surface.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
l. The combination with a press having two relatively-movable members of a flexible electro-deposited matrix of a sound-record, a yieldin body at the back bf said matrix between the same and one member of the press, and a tablet 0f comparatively rigid material for making a pressed sound-record on the other side ofsaid matrix and between the ing witnesses.
