Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4:, 1908.
Application filed June 3 1907- Serial No. 377086- T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILLUS DA COSTA NEWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ellico, in the county of Campbell and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cabinets or receptacles from which articles are to be dispensed, and has for its object to provide improved means for raising the lid thereof by means of afoot treadle, where by both the hands of the operator will be free to manipulate the contents thereof, said lid being automatically closed when the pressure on the foot treadle is removed. This object I accomplish in the manner and by the .means hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which: the figure is a perspective view of my improved device.
In the said drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes the cabinet or receptacle adapted to receive the material to be dispensed, the same being provided with a lid 2 hinged thereto at its rear at 3. In the present instance said receptacle is shown as mounted on a suitable base 4 which projects at the front at 5 to provide a suitable shelf upon which the operator may rest the vessel to be supplied from the contents of receptacle 1, though it will be understood that said recep tacle 1 may itself extend to the floor.
Pivoted to the base 1 at 6 are the side arms 7 of a foot treadle 8, while pivotally connected to each side arm 7 near its front end at 9 and extending upwardly therefrom at an angle thereto are two connecting bars 10, one on each side of the base l, said bars being pivotally connected at their upper ends at 11 to the lower ends of levers 12 pivoted intermediate their length at 13 to the receptacle, suitable coiled springs 14 connecting said side arms 7 with said levers above the pivotal points of the latter, shown. Said levers 12 are longitudinally slotted at 15 at their upper ends, forming a sliding engagement with pins 16 mounted in the sides of the lid 2 of the receptacle 1. I
From the above description the operation of my improved construction will be understood as follows: In the normal position shown the springs 14 exerting their tension between bars 10 and levers 12, maintain the foot treadlc 8 in its uppermost position, and at the same time retain the. lid 2 in its closed position. Now upon the application of the pressure. of the operators foot upon said foot trcadlc 8, the latter is depressed, and carries with it the bars 10, which in turn rock the levers 12 on their pivots 13 towards a vertical position, which lifts the lid 2 on its hinges 3 to the dotted line position shown, thereby permitting access to the contents of the receptacle 1, both hands of the opera tor being free to manipulate said contents. Upon the removal of the pressure of the foot from treadle S the springs 14 automatically return the parts to the position shown, thus closing the lid 2 and returning treadlo 8 to its uppermost position.
Ilaving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A cabinet or receptacle, embodying a body portion, a hinged lid, a foot treadle, side arms carrying said treadle and pivoted at their rear ends, levers pivoted intermediate their length and slidably connected to said lid at their upper ends, and connecting bars pivoted to said side bars and to said levers at the lower ends of the latter.
2. A cabinet or receptacle embodying a body portion, a hinged lid, a foot treadle, side arms carrying said treadle and pivoted at their rear ends, levers pivoted intermediate their length and slidably connected to said lid at their upper ends, connecting bars pivoted to said side bars and to said levers at the lower ends of the latter, and springs connecting said side bars and said levers above the pivots of the latter to normally retain said lid closed.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
