Description

No. 878,221. PATENTED FEB. 4, 1908. H. O. MATTHEWS. T. I'TSS FOR IRON STRUCTURES.
APPLICATION FILED APR.3,1907
iluueuioz Qvi bu ease:
a Ki (toning Applies ion To all whom 'it may cancer ,Be it known that I, Ilnnnnn'r t THEWS, a citizen ot the United. States ot America, residing at Salt Lake City, in the eounty of Salt Lake and State of l'tah, have invented neig and useful .lmprovements in. Trusses for Iron Structures, of which the fol lowing is a s pecifieation.
This invention relates to trusses and studding for fireproof and eonerete strut-turns,
and one of the principal objects of the same i is to provide a truss or stud which shall be o light weight, and of great stren -th, and which shall also be capable of many uses in metal structures.
Another object of the invention is to vide a truss or stud composed entire ot wire of the required gage, and comprising longitudinal strands twisted toge her and held the required distance apart by rrnsserl braces and spreader-s.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a studding for light iron partitions. and to provide means for attarhing metal laths thereto for holding the plaster.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which: the figure of the drawing is a plan view of a short section of a truss or stud made in arrordan e with my invention.
Referring to the drawing for a more pan pro ticular description of my invention, the rands or numerals 1. represent the two side 1 members of the truss, said member eonsisting of three or more strands of wire oi the required gage, said strands brine elosely t\ tied together to form a rigid bar or member oi the required length. At suitableiiuerralsin the length of the members i, spreaders are ilttv vided, said spreaders comprising two strands of wire of the required gage, said strands being twisted together closely in the renter, and
provided with oppositelydisposed loops :5, the
terminal ends of said strands being \'t':1' )t .tl
several'tiines around the members i, as at t,
and firmly united to said members t. brace rods 5 which continue. .t'rom nd to end t tiross 1 ia'tented Feb. 4, 1908.
inomlwi's t by wrapping the terminal ends of said spriaulers around said rods 5 to hold them in ronneetion with the members 1. A suitable ring: or loop ti unites the rods 5 at their point. of interseetimi intermediate the spreaders 2. llv means oi this consti'uetion, a tirni rigid truss or stud is pro- 1 vi let'i, whieh ol eoniparatively light weight and p reat strength. )ialleable iron books 7 z eonneeted at suitable intervals to the numbers 1 b v passing; the shanks S of said hoolis betwe n the twisted strands of the members 1 prior to the twisting operation. The books 7 are tor the purpose of eonneeting: the metal lath to the stud, said hooks being bent in the required manner to hold the metal lath lirmlv in plane. Alter the. truss or s ud has been. assembled as described, a thin routing ot spelter is applied to the de- (ice to prevent corrosion.
Frmn the foregoing it will be obvious that av ll'l or stud made-f in aoeordanee with my invention is adapted {or many uses in the romurmuion ol' iireproot' buildings, such as hollow partitions, tloors, ceilings, walls, root t'onstruetion, as a reinl'ormfor concrete beams, t-olunms, ehimn 3's, elevator shafts, reservoirs other planes.
Th russ or st d being of open work, can be readily mbedded in the concrete and .l'orms a strong and durable trace. The loops 3 in the spreader provide means tor securing lateral braces which ma be passed through said loops for binding all the studs or trus I gether.
llnvn thus dest-ribed the ltlVtlltlOIl, what i rlziirn l. A truss or. stud comprising loi'igitudinal members eontposed of twisted wires, spreaders extemling; trom one n'ieinbtjerto the other,
and oonsistin" ol" twistml wires, the terminal ends oi said u ires being; wrapped around the longitudimil meu' bers, crossed braces (ex-- tending through tbr wra pedportions of the spreader. and hops or rings eonneeting the interse'etiinr ortions ol' the cross bran-es.
