Description

f l uti" ut tire.'
THOMAS WOSSER, O15-SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
Letters Patent No. 87,813, dated March 16, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the same.
To all whom it 'may concern i Beit known that I, THOMAS Wossnn, of the city of San Francisco, in theI county of San Francisco,`and
i State of California, have invented a new and useful machine for holding up the levers, and allowing the steam to follow the piston to the termination of the stroke, for the style'of engines known as Westernriver engines, technically called a gag; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, referencel being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication.
'lo illustrate more clearly the application of my invention, I give three views of an engine, two' of which show tbe application of the gag and its several parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the gags a a,
,I stand b, connecting-rod c.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of engine. Figure 3 is a plan of engine, showing the gags a a., stand b, connecting-rod c.
Figures 4, 4, 4, show the gag on an enlarged scale. The peculiar form of this arm must be modified for the different engines it may be applied to.
Figure 5 shows the journalpin for gag a put in stand b.
Figures 6, 6. Stand b, to support .the gag a.
Figures 7, 7. Connecting-rod c.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use A my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction The general form of its various parts may be modified, to suit space and distance.
The objects obtained by this invention are- First, it enables the engineer to attach the gag while the engine is in motion, to give any requisite amount of steam, and obviate the use of folding cams on the engine-shaft, enabling the engineer to graduate the steam to the load on the steamboat, and draught of water of the same7 and can be as readily detached, the whole arrangement being adjusted by turning the screws d d, with the fingers, to the desired height, andl securing them in place with the thun1b screw e, the top of screws d being chambered ont, vand a piece of rubber inserted, to cushion the levers on.
Second, by inspection ofthe drawing, it will be seen that the motion to the gags is communicated .from the shaft that is worked by the exhaust-valve cam, and the screws must be so adjusted as to allow the steam-valve to seat in advance of the corresponding exhaust-valve, while the gags take their motion from the full-stroke cam. The effect produced is far better than using a full-stroke cam direct, the "gag" being always adjustable, and, when not required, can
be screwed down clear of the levers.
I do not claim the connecting-rod, or the arms, or screws, independently.
, What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arrangement of the arms a, the stand b, with the journal-pin j, the connecting-rod c, the screws d,.with their rubber cushion g, and thumbscrew e, substantially as set forth.
THOMAS WOSSER.
