UNITED STATES PATENT` OFFICE.
` IMPROVEMENT IN THREAD-GUARDS FOR SPOOLS IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 87,810, dated March 16, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE WHEELooK,
I of Washington city, in the District of Columonto the spindle, when it becomes-tangled and breaks, thus causing stoppage and much inconvenience and delay in the operation of sew- 1ng.
The necessity for this invention will be at once conceded by all who have been accustomed to much sewing.
It consists in so inclosing the spool, especially when full, in two cone or cup-shaped heads, which cause the unwinding thread-to incline toward the middle of the spool instead of being allowed to kinkoff at the ends, which it is so liable to do froml the twist in the thread.
j' is the spindle of thegmachine, onto which may lirst be put a small tube to form a shoulder, against which the thimble of the cup a a works, which thimble extends quite through the spool, and may be seen prolonged at d.
, lt also has two springs, g gf, soldered or struck from same piece to it to hold the spool centrally, or so that the spool will be held iirmly.
After the spool-thimble d is in place and so adjusted as to turn smoothly and freely on the spindlef the thimble e is placed tightly on the spindlefin front of thimble d, which thimble e performs the office ota washer, against which thimble d tugns. These parts may be regarded as permanent fixtures. The spool is now slipped. on over thimble c onto d and against the disk or cup a a', where it is held by springs g g. The spool is followed by a conical cup or disk, b, the thimble b of which is large enough to slip over the thimbles d and e. The concave sides of the cups are toward each other, as represented. y
For larger spools, I prefer two cups more concave, so as to allow about the same distance between the edges.
In using the device itis only necessary to remove cup 11 to remove the spool.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. The conical cups d b, in combination with thimbles d In', substantially as and for the purpose lset forth.
2. Thimbles d and b, in combination with cups a and b, springs g g', and thimble e, as described and set forth.
' GEO. WHEELOCK.
