To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ATHERTON D. CON- vnnsn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vinchcndon, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drums, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a means for effectively maintaining the rim of a drum upon the flesh or tuck hoop, no matter what character of head is employed, or whether the cords at one point be tightened more than at other points, and means serving under all conditions of use to prevent the rim from shifting from its true position rela tively to the head.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth' applied; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through a part of the head portion of a drum illustrating a slightly different adaptation of the stay.

My invention relates particularly to means for maintaining the rims of a drum in normal position relatively to the heads and the flesh or tuck hoops when the heads are made of fiber or from material other than sheep-skin, but the application may be also made when sheepskin heads are employed, if desired, but since a fiber head cannot be stretched as much or as safely as a head of sheep-skin, hence the necessity of insuring the rims always remaining in position, they being prone to displacement under ordinary conditions when used especially in connection with said fiber heads.

A represents the body of a drum, which is provided at the top and at the bottom with the customary interiorly located strengthen- Each end portion of the body is provided with the customary flesh or tuck hoop 10 and head 1 1, which heads are wrapped at the edges around the flesh or tuck hoops which heads after being passed around the flesh or tuck hoops extend to the interior of the body A, as is shown in the drawings.

In connection with each flesh or tuck hoop a rim 13 is employed, and these rims are adapted to rest upon the outer faces of the flesh or tuck hoops 10. In connection with each rim and its accompanying flesh or tuck hoop two or more stays B are employed. These stays may be and preferably are made of sheet metal and the metal may be a spring metal, but it is not absolutely necessary. Preferably these stays consist of a single strip 14 of material adapted to extend along the outer face of a rim 13 and over and in engagement with the tuck or flesh hoop upon which the rim rests, as is shown in Fig. 1. Also these stays B may be secured to the rims 13 in any suitable or approved manner; they are preferably attached to the rims by means of eyelets 15 so that the said eyelets not only serve as fastening devices for the stays, but likewise act to receive the tightening cords 16 for the drum, as is shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 2 I have illustrated a slight departure in the formation of the stays. The stays in Fig. 2 are designated as B, and each of the said stays consists of a lower section 17 that is riveted or otherwise secured to the outer face of the body A of the drum, and an upper angular portion 18 whose upper member engages with the outer face of a flesh or tuck hoop 10 and accompanying rim 13.

It will be observed that when either form of stay is employed, the rims are eflectually prevented from shifting from their set position over or to a bearing against the flesh or tuck hoops, so that under no possibility can a rim be shifted so as to uncover a portion of its accompanying tuck hoop, and thus the liability of the head being loosened is very remote even under the most severe conditions of usage.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. In a drum, the combination with the body, the flesh or tuck hoop surrounding the body at the end, the head carried by the tuck hoop and resting on the edge of the body, and the rim, of a plurality of fixed stays spaced apart and engaging with the flesh or tuck hoop and the rim, the said stays preventing the mm from shifting, and mainplainc'ing it in position relatively to the said ea 2. In a drum, the combination with the body, the flesh or tuck hoops encircling the body at the ends, the heads carried by the tuck hoops and the rims in alinement with the tuck hoops, of a plurality of stays located at each end of the drum and each comprising a metal strip engaging the outer faces of the tuck hoops and the rims, the said stays being rigidly secured to a part of the drum.

3. In a drum, the combination with the body, a flesh or tuck hoop, a head and a rim, of metal stays for preventing the rim from shifting relatively to the head and the flesh or tuck hoop, the said stays being in engagement with the outer faces of said rim and tuck hoop, and fastening devices extending through the stays and rigidly securing them to a part of the drum.

4. In a drum, the combination with a body, the tuck hoops engaging the outer face of the body at each end thereof, the heads carried thereby and the rims, of stays rigidly secured to the rims at their outer faces and extending to an engagement with the outer faces of the tuck hoops.

5. In a drum, the combination with the body, the tuck hoops, the heads carried by the said hoops, and the rims, of stays located at the outside of the rims and extending to an engagement with the outside faces of the tuck hoops, and eyelets securing the said stays to the said rims, through which eyelets the tightening ropes may be passed.

6. In a drum, the combination with the body, the tuck hoops encircling the body at the ends, the heads carried by said tuck hoops, and the rims adapted to rest upon the tuck hoops, of stays comprising metal strips rigidly secured to the outer faces of the rims and extending into engagement with the outer faces of the tuck hoops.
