MICHAEL ANGELO HIRSOH, OF FRANKLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Application filed May 6, 1905. Serial No. 259.208.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL ANGELO HIRSOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a device or clip adapted to be applied to articles such as booksparticularly small check-books, memorandum books, bank pass-books, account books, inclosuresparticularly envelops, small pasteboard boxes-, and the like and to attach to such articles an elastic band, cord, tape, or the like, or serve other useful func tion, such as securing the flap of an envelop in its closed position. The invention may be readily understood and explained by reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating what is now believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device or clip; Fig.2 is another view thereof looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of a small check-book with the clip applied thereto; Fig. 4 is a view from the inside of the cover of the check-book of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view through said cover on line 55 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 shows a documentary envelop with the clip applied thereto; Fig. 7 is another view of an envelop with the clip applied thereto.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5, the metallic clip, preferably made of well-known quality of wire suitably resilient for such purposes and bent to approximately the shape shown, com
. prises a retaining or anchoring stem 4, pointed or sharpened at one end and having at its other end a hook 3 which at its bend extends through an opening in the cover of the book. At its extremity 2 the hook bears against or toward the outer surface of the book and is curled or bent back upon itself to avoid a sharp or rough point. Between its said extremity and the point where its bend leaves the opening through the book, the hook bows or arches outward away from the surface of the book, thereby forming what may be designatedvan eye 1. Normally, that is, before its application to the book, the distance between the extremity of the hook and 'the stem 4 which it overhangs, is preferably less than the thickness of the material or wall of the article to which the clip is applied; it follows that the resilient tongue, formed by that part of the book which is positioned at the outer surface of the book, bears at its extremity firmly against said surface. An elastic band 20, cord or the like, may be readily passed into and out of the eye 2 by forcing it under the extremity of the hook, which yieldingly bears against the book. Intermediate its hooked and pointed ends, the stem 4 is bent at 5, to preferably an approximate right angle, in a plane approximately at right-angles to the plane of the hook. Between the angle 5 and its pointed end, the stem may be straight, or it may have a slight upward bend, as at 6, Fig. 2, this latter bend enabling the point of the stem to bear against and bite into or slightly penetrate the surface which it engages. The bending of the stem at 5, enables it to engage the surface of the article in a direction transverse to the position of the hook of the stem, thereby maintaining said hook always in an upright position with reference to the outer surface of the article and preventing it from tilting to one side or the other in passing an elastic band or the like into or out of the eye 1.
The clip may be readily applied by forcing the pointed end of the stem through the wall of the article, the check-book of Figs. 3, 4 and 5, for example, until the bend of hook 3 extends through said wall in the position shown in Fig. 5. If desirable, a label or cov ering of fabric 7 may be applied to the inner surface of the article over the stem of the clip, thereby preventing'the clip from turning or otherwise working loose.
In Fig. 6, I have shown the clip applied to the flap of a documentary envelop in a manner similar to that explained above with reference to the check-book.
In Fig. 7, 12 is the flap of an envelop 11. A tongue 13, having extensions 14 and 15, is preferably made of fabric and secured to flap 12. A clip of the construction above explained and applied to the envelop 11, is adapted to engage through an opening in tongue 13 and secure the latter to hold the flap 12 closed. In engaging the tongue 13 with the clip, the extension 15 is gripped and pulled downward to bring the opening 16 over the clip; the extension 14 is then gripped and the tongue 13 pulled upward drawing the part of the tongue 13 below aperture 16 upward between the end of the hook of the clip and the surface of the envelop. The clip will thus press upon and grip the tongue 13. To open the envelop, the extension 1.5 is gripped and the tongue 13 pulled downward until the clip lies within opening 16.
As will be understood, the present invention is in some respects specific to the inven- "-tion of my application for patent, Sr. N o.
248,624, filed March 6th, 1905, wherein I have claimed broadly the combination with an article such as specificd, of a metallic de vice or clip consisting of a retaining or anchoring stem having a hook at one end. thereof, said hook forming an eye at the outer surface of the article and at its bend extending through an opening in the article to the stem which engages an inner surface of the article.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with an article such as specified, of a metallic device or clip consisting of a retaining or anchoring stem having a hook at one end thereof, said hook forming an eye at the outer surface of the article and at its bend extending through an opening in the article to the stem which latter engages an inner surface of the article, said stem, between the hook at one end and its other end, being bent in a plane approximately parallel to said inner surface of the article.
2. The combination with an article such as specified, of a metallic device or clip consisting of a retaining or anchoring stem having a hook at one end thereof, said hook forming an eye at the outer surface of the article and at its bend extending through an opening in the article to the stem which latter engages an inner surface of the article, said stem, between the hook at one end and its other end, being bent to approximately a right-angle in a plane a proximately parallel to said inner surface 0 the article.
3. The combination with an article such as specified, of a metallic device or clip consisting of a retaining or anchoring stem point-ed at one end and having a hook at its other end, said hook forming an eye at the outer surface of the article and at its bend extending through an opening in the article to the stem which latter engages an inner surface of the article, said stem, between its pointed end and the hook at its other end, being bent in a plane approximately parallel to said inner surface of the article.
4. The combination with an article such as specified, of a metallic device or clip consisting of a retaining or anchoring stem having a hook at one end thereof, said hook forming an eye at the outer surface of the article and at its bend extending through an opening in the article to the stem which latter engages an inner surface of the article, said stem, between the hook at one end and its other end, being bent in a plane approximately parallel to said inner surface of the article, and an elastic band, cord or the like passing through said eye of the metallic device or clip.
5. As an article of manufacture, a metallic device or clip for attaching an elastic band to a book, or for analogous use, said device complete and ready for application to the article consisting of a stem having a hook at one end thereof, said stem, between said hook at one end and its other end, being bent in a plane approximately at right-angles to the lane of the hook, as and for the purposes set orth.
6. As an article of manufacture, a metallic device or clip for attaching an elastic band to a book, or for analogous use, said device complete and ready for application to the article consisting of a stem having a hook at one end thereof, said stem, between said hook at one end and its other end, being bent to approximately a right-angle in a plane approximately at right-angles to the plane of the hook, as and for the purposes set forth.
7. As an article of manufacture, a metallic device or clip for attaching an elastic band to a book, or for analogous use, said device complete and ready for application to the article consisting of a stem pointed at one end and having a hook at its other end, said stem, between said hooked end and its pointed end, being bent in a plane approximately at rightangles to the lane of the hook, as and for the purposes set orth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
