Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1 908.
Application filed June 24. 1907- Serial No. 380-503.
I'Z'e (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL M. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at lndlanapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use' i'ul Improvements in Dry-Pipe Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, yet efficient, dry pipe valve for dry p automatic sprinkling systems, the construction being such that only a single valve and seat. is used and the construction also being such that a reduction from normal of the air pressure in the dry pipe will release the supported in a spider 16 within chambers of casing 10. Pivolally mounted within chambers 10 are locking levers 17 which are pivoted closely adjacent valve 14 and each provided with a shoulder 17 adapted to engage the valve 1-1 and hold the same tightly upon its seat. The free end of each lever 17 adapted to be engaged by a plunger 18 pass ing through a packing gland 19 mounted in the wall of casing 10. The outer end of each plunger 18 is carried bya piston or diaphragm 20 mounted in a chamber 21 which chamber col'nmunicates, through pipe 22, with the'chambers 10 or the d ypipc system The chambers 21 beneath the diaphragm is vented at 23.
In opcrationi Valve 14 is brought to its seat and lever 17 swung to the position shown in the drawings, the free ends thereof just passing the inner ends of plunger 18, and
thereupon the desired air pressure is introduced into the dry pipe system and chambers 10, as well as the chambers 21, said pressure, therefore, serving to hold plunger 18 in posi tion to prevent any outward swing of levers 17, so that valve 14 is held securely against the water pressure in passage 11. As soon, however, as there is a reduction of the air pressure in chambers 21, the water pressure upon valve 14 is suflicient to swing levers 17 outward, causing them to slip past the plungers 18, thus permitting valve 14 to fly up from its seat quickly and freely so that water may rush into-the chambers 10 and fill the dry pipe system. It is noticed that by this construction the air pressure operates directly upon the same valve which checks the water pressure.
I claim as my invention: Y In a structure of the class described, th
combination with the main casing comprising a chamber having an open passage communicating' with the pipe system, and a passage communicating with the water supply,
witha valve seat at its inner end, a valve arranged within said chamber and adapted to seat on said seat, a locking lever arranged within the chamber and adapted to engage the valve to prevent movement from its seat, a restraining plunger projected into the chamber in the path of movement of the locking lever, a diaphragm carrying said plunger, and a connection bet-ween one side 01 said diaphragm and the chamber, for the purpose set forth.
Iln witness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this fifteenth day of June, D.- one thousand nine hundred and seven.
