Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, SANFORD E. WVEsT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment adapted to be secured within the bowl of a tobacco-pipe; and the object being to provide means to prevent liquid moisture from the tobacco accumulating in the bottom of the bowl, and thereby to obtain a dry smoke from the pipe contents.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved attachment for a tobacco-pipev Fig. 2 is a side View of a pipe with its bowl in section, and illustrating a central vertical sectional view of the attachment applied to the pipe, as in use, Fig. 3 is a top plan section, taken on line 00x of Fig. 2, and, Fig. 4 is a vertical section, taken on line @/j of the same.

My pipe attachment comprises two narrow metallic members a and b which are slidably mounted on each other.
The member a has a straight body portion a which terminates with an upwardly curved extension a and the side portions of this member is bent and overlapping each other to form outer projecting flanges a 0. to bear against the interior surface of the pipe-bowl c.
The member I) has a straight body portion 12 whose side edges are bent to overlap upon and hold by frictional contact upon the over lapping edges a of the body portion of the member a, and the upper part of this member b is bent laterally to form a tongue N, which acts as a handle to remove the attachment from the pipe.
When the attachment is placed within the pipe-bowl c the elasticity of the curved extension of the member a causes the flanges a to bear outwardly in firm contact upon the interior surface of the bottom of the bowl, thereby forming a sealed air draft orifice d which communicates directly with the air orifice d formed by the holding edges of the members a and b, andthe orifice e of the pipestem 0 in the manner shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
When the tobacco t is ignited the suction, created by the user of the pipe, causes the tobacco smoke to pass through the orifices d and c, in the direction indicated by the arrows 1 and 2 in Fig. 2, and at the same time cold air passes through the orifice al in the direction indicated by the arrow 3 and mingles with the hot air withdrawn-from the stem of the pipe. As the curved extension of the metallic member a becomes heated by the burning tobacco, its radiation of heat is thrown off and tends to keep the bottom of the bowl 0 perfectly dry and free of liquid moisture, and at the same time the neutralization of the cold air with the hot air, through their respective orifices, causes a regular even draft to be obtained through the stem of the pipe by thG'SDlOkBI. It is therefore evident that by my construction and arrangement of parts, I provide a device that contains in itself all that is necessary to prevent liquid moisture from settling at the bottom of the pipe-bowl and clogging the orifice of the stem thereof, and at the same time a device that is simple, durable, is easily applied to a pipe, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Having described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1S"
1. In a tobacco-pipe, an attachment adapted to be secured within the pipe-bowl and having a curved extension to fit the bottom of the latter and said attachment provided respectively with a cold air and a hot air passage to communicate with the orifice in the stem of the pipe. 7

The herein described attachment, comprising two metallic members, one of which has a straight body portion that terminates with an upwardly curved extension and said member having its side portions bent to form rear projecting flanges, and the other member having a straight body portion whose side edges are bent to hold by frictional contact upon the body portion of first mentioned member, and said second member terminat- I ing with a lateral rear extending tongue located above the body portion of first mension provided With outer projecting flanges first mentioned member, suhstantially as so as to form a hot air passage entering the pipeboW1 and communicating With the orifice of the pipe-stem, and the other member slidably' mounted on first mentioned member and constructed so as to rovide a cold air passage from the top of t e pipe-bowl and communicating With the hot air passage of shown and for the purpose s ecified.
