' REPAIR-LAST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 28, 1908.
Applieatiozi filed April 15.1907. Serial No. 368.231.
ments in Repair-Lasts, of which the follow-' ing is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in repair lasts. durable last which can-be readily adjusted in the shoe and which can ,be readily insorted in and removed from the shoe.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and making part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation of our improved last, parts being broken away to expose the operating mechanism; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, parts being broken away to expose the operating mechanism; Fig. 3 is' a transverse sectional view taken on a vertical line passing through the pivot points in the heel part.
Same .letters of reference refer to like parts.
In said drawings A and B represent the heel and toe parts respectivelyof a divided ally mounted upon a .bearing block C by with. Said bolt is provided with an angumeans of pivot points D passing through the walls. of the last and taking into sockets-E in said block. Rigidly secured to the toe part in any convenient manner is a corresponding bearing block F. As shown this bearing block has a bifurcatedprojection Gr through which passes a holding bolt. H having a shoulder I thereon adapted to engage against the projection G, the threaded end J ofthe bolt taking into the bottom of the last as seen in Fig. 1. The upper end K of said bolt is adapted to receive a wrench or screw driver for operating it. Slidably mounted in blocks C and F are parallel rods L. Connecting said rods L midway their length is a strap M. Blocks C and F are connected by a toggle comprising a head piece N and links 0 and P connecting said head piece with blocks C and F respectively. A toggle operating bolt Q properly threaded passes through parts N and M and in threaded engagement there- It is designed to make a strong,
lar head adapted to receive an operating wrench S.
The operation of our improved lastis as follows: To insert the last in the shoe the adjacent edges are brought together by contracting the toggle and then the heel part A is tipped upwardly on its pivot thus contracting the last to its shortest extent and rendering it easily. inserted in the shoe.
After it is inserted in the shoe the heel part is tipped back into normal position and the last expanded by expanding the toggle. The
two parts of the last slide to and from the central strap M on the parallel rods L according as the toggle is expanded or contracted.
-'The advantages of our last are that it is strong and durable and readily inserted in and removed from a shoe. The last is adjustable in the shoe and the heel part is capable of being tipped on its pivot at any point in its adjustment.
Having thus described our invention and its use we claim:
-1. A two part last comprising hollow heel part, a block pivotally mounted entirely withrf in said hollow part, a hollow toe part having a bearing block rigidly mounted entirely within said hollow part, parallel rods slidably mounted in said bearing blocks, a toggle connecting said bearing blocks and means for operating said toggle.
2. .A two part last comprising a hollow heel part having a bearing block pivotally mounted entirely .within said hollow heel part, a hollow toe part provided with a bearing block rigidly mounted entirely within said hollow toe part, parallel rods slidably mounted'in said bearing blocks above the bottom of said last parts, a strap connecting said parallel rods, a toggle connecting said bearing blocks and a toggle operating bolt mounted in said toggle and said strap.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses this twelfth dayof April, 1907.
DANIEL ROUNDS. CLARENCE E.COOK.
