To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigam have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved implement for handling iire hose and supporty ing the same, and its object is to provide a device which is particularly adapted to be quickly attached to a line of hose while in use and lying upon the ground or other support, and is provided with handles to facilitate the lifting and moving of the line.
It is also an object of the invention to so construct the device that the handles may be folded longitudinally of the hose to permit the line to be passed through a ladder, window, or other small opening, and to provide means for locking the handles in their folded and extended positions.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide the device with means for engaging the rungs of a ladder to Support the hose and also to provide the same with a detachable and adjustable support or rest which may be quickly and easily manipulated, the device being further provided with certain other new and useful features, all as hereinafter more fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2, is a side elevation ofthe same with parts broken away to show the construction; and Fig. 3, is a plan view of the same, partially in section and with the adjustable support or rest attached.
As shown in the drawing, 1 is a cylindrical clamp adapted to embrace a fire hose or hose pipe and consisting of two semi circular halves or members 2 and 8 (lined with rubber) hinged together ate at one edge, and each provided with parallel ears 5 extending longitudinally of the members and outward from their outer sides. Handles 6 having circular heads 7 are -pivoted between the ears lby pivot pins S'passing through the ears and axes of the heads, to turn in the longitudinal plane of the clamp and each head is formed with two transverse grooves or notches 9 and 10 adapted to be engaged by alockin dog 11 pivoted between the ears and norma ly held in contact with said head by a spring 12, the notches 9 being so positioned that the dogs will engage them when the handles are turned to extend laterally outward at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the clamp, and the notches 10 so placed that they will be engaged by the dogs when the handles are turned to extend parallel with said axis. The handles are thus locked in either of these two positions until the dogs are raised by means of a iinger piece extending outward from each dog. The head of each handle is also formed with a shoulder 13 on its periphery to engage a ledge or stop 14 formed on each clamping member between the ears and limit the turning of the handles. The shoulders engage the stops when the handles are in their extended positions with the dogs engaging the'notches 9 and thus serve to take the strain from the dogs when a lifting strain is put upon the handles.
Pivotally attached at 15 to the edge of the clamp member 2 is a latch or hook 16 consisting of a broad curved blade 17 extending in one direction fro'm its pivot and provided with teeth or lugs 18 on its lower side to engage in a series of openings 1 9 in the member' 3 near the adjacent edge thereof, and of a curved handle portion 2O extending in the opposite direction. A spring 21, preferably a block of rubber is interposed between the end of the handle andthe clamping member 2, to hold the latch in a position to engage its lugs with the openings when the two halves of the clamp are brought together, the end of the blade being turned up slightly and the edge of the member 3 beveled at 22 so that the latch will readily slide over said edge to engage its lugs with the openings. A notch 23 1s cut in the edge 22 and a tongue 24 projects from the opposing edge .of the clamp member 2 to engage said notch, thus preventing the parts of the clamp from moving relatively in a longitudinal direction when the clamp is locked by the latch, and said tongue also .by projecting outward beneath the blade of the latch forms a stop therefor against which it is held by its spring 21. A
To prevent the clamp from being accidentally unlocked a cam disk 25 is pivotally secured to the clamping member 2 to turn beneath the free end of the arm ofthe latch, and this disk is formed with a high side which when the disk is turned to bring the same beneath the arm, prevents its depression and the consequent lifting of the teeth 18 from the openin s.
The pintle ofthe hinge 4 is extended at one endv and turned back longitudinally over the clamp to form a large hook 26 and the opposite extended end 27 is screw-threaded to receive a cylindrical cap 28 having a circumferential groove 29 intermediate its ends. rIhis cap or sleeve serves to hold the pintle in place and also ,as a means for attaching a supporting rod or 'rest 30 which consists of a tube 31 and a rod 32 telescoping therein. The tube is of a size to receive the cap or sleeve 28 and is provided with a spring actuated locking pin 33 to engage the groove 29 and detachably hold the support or rest attached to the clamp. The rod is adjustably held in the tube by a second locking pin 34 on the tube to engage a series of grooves 35 in the rod, and laterally extending curved arms 36 are secured to the tube near its lower end to embrace the line of hose, openings 37being provided in the ends of said arms to receive a strap for securing the hose between the arms.
By making the locking latch of the clamp with a wide thin blade and curving the latch so that it will lie adjacent to the "clamp, the device may be clamped to a line of hose lying on the ground by lopening the clamp and closing the same around the hose by means of the handles without handling the hose or otherwise manipulating the clamp, thus especially adapting the device for use in butting up on the line when theregis a heavy water pressure therein. The device is also especially adapted for handling a line of hose on a ladderas the handles may be folded back out of the way parallel with the line so that it may be passed through the ladder Vor through a window or other opening, and the hook 26 may be engaged with the rungs of the ladder to support the line and also serves asa handle. The circular form of the handle heads and the manner in which they are pivotally attached, obviate the danger of' their becoming clogged by ice etc., and thus prevented from turning, and the locking dogs securely hold the handles extended or folded but may be'quickly and easily operated to release the same.
The carrier may be attached to the hose pipe or to the hose adjacent thereto and the firemen in handling the same, and to assist in supporting and holding the pipe when the carrier is so attached, the detachable rest or supporting rod 30 is provided. This rod is adapted to engage the pavement or floor at its lower end to bear the weight of the hose and pipe', and this rod may be quickly adjusted to vary its length and may be as quickly attached or detached. To steady the hose it may be attached to the rod by means of the arms 36 as described. y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In avhose carrier, the combination with a clamp consisting of two hinged members, of parallel ears extending outward from the outer side of each member, handles, a circular head on each handle having notches, a shoulder formed on each head, pivot pins extending through the ears and heads to pivotally attach the handles, a stop formed on each member between the ears to engage the shoulders on the heads, dogs pivoted between the ears to engage the notches, and springs to hold "the dogs in contact with the heads. In a hose carrier, the combination of a clamp consisting of two semicylindrical members formed with hinge members at one edge, locking means to hold the opposite edges of said members together, and a pintle for the hinge members extended at one end and bent to form a hook.
3. In a hose carrier, the combination of a clamp consisting of two semi cylindrical members hinged together at one edge and one of said members formed with a bevel edge having a notch and with a series of openings near said edge, a latch pivotally attached in" termediate its ends to the free edge of the yother clamp member and consisting of a curved blade portion and a curved handle portion, a tongue on the free end of said member' to which the latch is pivoted to engage the underside of said latch and to project into the notch in the beveled edge of the' other member, lugs on the under side of the blade of the latch to engage the openings in the clamp member, a spring interposed between the handle portion of the latch and the clamp member, and a cam-disk pivoted on the said member to turn beneath the said handle and lock the latch.
4. In a hose carrier and support, the com-` bination of a clamp consisting of two semicylindrical members formed with hinge members at one edge having eyes, a pintle engag-4 ing said eyes having an extended and bent end forming a hook and formed with a p ro- J jecting screw-threaded opposite end, a sleeve on said screw-threaded end, a tube into one end of ywhich the sleeve projects, means carried by said tube to detachably secure the tube to the sleeve, and a rod adjustable within said tube.
