Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed Tune 6. 1907- Serial No. 377.663-
' and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accom anying drawings.
WVhi e the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details without departing from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a fishing rod showing the reel secured thereto by means of a clamp embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the clamp. Fig. 3 is an end view of the clamp, parts broken away, showing the same when closed. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the relation of the parts when the latch lever is engaged with the cross bar preliminary to tightening the clamp. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the latch lever. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3, the clamp being open.
Corresponding and like partsare referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The clamp comprises two members 1 and 2, which are hinged at 3. The member 1 has a slot or opening 4 at its free end, whereas the member 2 is provided at its free end with a latch lever 5. The outer side of the slot or opening 4 is closed by means of a cross bar 6, which preferably is separate from the clamp member and secured thereto. As shown, the cross bar 6 consists of a wire and has its end portions inserted in eyes formed by rolling projecting portions of the member 1 near opposite edges thereof.
The latch lever 5 is hinged or ivoted to the free end of the member 2 an curved to conform to the circumference of the clamp when closed, so as to lie close against the member 2. Knuckles are provided at adj acent ends of the member 2 and latch lever 5 and receive a pintle by means of which the latch lever is pivotally connected to the clamp member 2. Projections 7 extend from the knuckles of the latch lever and are adapted to engage with the inner side of the cross bar 6 and secure the clamp members when the clamp is fitted to the rod 8. The projections 7 are located upon the outer rear side of the knuckles when the latch lever is closed upon the member 2. When the latch lever has its free end moved outward from the member 2, the rojections 7 engagewith the inner lower sire of the cross bar 6 and upon pressing the free end of the latch lever upon the member 2, the clamp members 1 and 2 are drawn together and closed tightly about the rod 8 and the projecting portion of the reel frame about which said clamp is fitted. The projections 7 constitute the fulcrum for the latch lever and upon moving the free end of the latch, member towards the member 2, the end portions of the clamp members are drawn together, the hinged joint between the latch lever andv the clamp member 2 partly entering the slot or opening 4, as indicated most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. The projections 7 are an integral art of the latch lever and are preferably ormed by pressing portions of the knuckles of the latch lever outward, said knuckles being formed with cuts extended inward from their extremities. A portion of the knuckle encircles the pintle, whereas the remaining portion is bent outward to form the projection.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A clamp comprising an encircling body portion provided at one end with an opening, a cross bar closing the outer side of said opening, and a latch lever pivoted to the opposite end of said encircling body and having an off-standing projection at its pivoted end to engage with the inner side of the aforesaid cross bar closing the outer side of the opening at the opposite end of said encircling body when the clamp is closed.
2.' A clamp comprising an encircling body provided at one end with an opening, a cross bar closing the outer side of said opening, a latch lever pivoted to the opposite end of said encircling body, and a knuckle joint between the latch lever and encircling body and having a projection upon the outer side of the knuckle to draw the end portions of the encircling body together, the joint between the latch 'lever and encircling body partly entering the said opening at one end of the encircling body when the clamp is closed.
3. A clamp comprising an encircling body having an opening at one end, a cross bar closing the outer side of said opening, a latch lever pivoted to the opposite end of the en circling body, and a knuckle joint between the latch lever and encircling body, said latch lever having portions pressed outward from the knuckle to form a fulcrum to engage with the aforesaid cross bar at the outer side of the opening of said encirclingbody.
4. A clamp comprising an encircling body having an opening at one end, a cross bar closing the outer side of said opening, a latch lever pivoted to the opposite end of the encircling body, and a knuckle joint between the latch lever and encircling body, the knuckles of the latch lever having cuts extended inward and having portions border- 7 ing upon the cuts pressed outward to form projections to engage with the aforesaid cross bar at the outer side of the said opening to hold the clamp closed;
5. A clamp comprising hinged members, one of said members having an opening at its free end, a cross bar closing the outer side of said opening, a latch lever pivoted to the free end of the other member, and a knuckle joint between the latch lever and the member to which said latch lever is connected, said knuckle joint having a projection upon its outer side to engage with the aforementioned cross bar to effect contraction of the clamp and. serving to secure the same when closed.
In testimony whereof I afl iX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
