v. ATTORNEYS indicated WILLIAM BALLAR comrnsn ICE-TONGS D MOORE, OF MIAMI, FLORIDA.
AN D WEIGHING-SCALE.
Specification of Letters Patentl' Application filed September 5, 1907. Serial No. 39] ..46Q-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BALLARD Moons, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented new. and useful Im rovemen'ts in a Combined Ice- Tongs an Wei hing-Scales, of which the following isa in I, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates by means of which ice or other commodity may be Weighed and its wei ht indicated.
I have illustratedone embodiment of the invention as showing a practical form, and will particularly explain the same and point out the invention in the claims,
Reference is to behad to the accompanyings drawings formin a part of this specification, in which simi ar characters of refer ence indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of an ice tongs and weighing scales constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a side view, the parts being in section, on the line wx in Fig. 1'.
In the'form of the invention shown a pair of arms Ais provided, having handles a and pivotally connected as at a, and these serve to a form of tongs as a support and carrier for a load-holder in the form of a pair of arms or tongs proper B, pivotally connected as at Z), and provided with spurs b for gripping a cake of ice, as i at 10. The connection between the sup orting arms A and the load-holder is efl'ecte through the medium of a spring balance, of which D indicates the graduated case, which is supported on the pivot a that unites the arms and D indicates the spring rodof the balance carrying the usual pointer, said balance being constructed and operating in the well known manner.
The arms A are extended beyond their ivot, as at A, and are provided at their ower ends with a means for establishing a connection between said arms and the arms or tongs B, this connection in the form shown consisting of inwardly extending guide loops C that loosely embrace the arms B, so as to permit a free movement thereof relatively to the extensions A, when the tongs are opened or closed, or when said tongs move vertically to the extent permitted by the spring balance. One side Q of each loop or guide is pivoted as at c, and is provided with a finger piece or projection a so that said side may 011 its pivot to permit the complete disconarrns B. On the gripping arms B may be opened and-closed by a suitable movement of the; handled arms A, and when a cake of ice or other load is held by the arms B, the latter with their load will act on the spring balance in proportion to the weight of the load. The provision for detaching the operative connection between the gripping tongs B and their operating means, is to meet possible doubts on the part of a buyer as to whether the scale is being mani ul'ated through the operatingmeans, and the isconnecting of the parts so that the extensionsA may be swung to the positions indicated in the dotted lines in Fig. 1, makes it clear to the purchaser that there is no possibility of the spring balance being controlled by the vendor. In order that the spring balance may be thrown out of action when desired and a fixed relation established between the load-holding tongs and the supports-A, I provide a connecting bar E, which in the embodiment of the invention illustrated is pivoted at its lower end to the pivot b of the tongs, as clearly illustrated inFig. 2, andsaid bar is provided with a be brought to the position indicated in Fig. 2, in which it is received on the stud f on the case D of the spring balance, a binding nut F serving to clamp'thc bar in the desired position and thus establishing a rigid connection between the pivots a of the supporting and operating arms A and of the gripping tongs B, whereby the spring balance is thrown out of action and the load-gripping arms thus held against vertical movement relatively to the supporting arms A. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
l. A carrying and weighing device, comprising a load-holder, a support therefor on which the load-holder is movable, a weighing means forming a connection between the load holder and its support, and additional connecting means establishing a sliding connection between the said. load-holder and its support.
2. A carrying-and weighing device, combe conveniently'swung westerns; 1998,
nectionbetween the extensions A" and the pivot stud of the swinging isprovided to hold I 1 the swinging side in the closedposition. By I this construction it will be seen that the slot 6 whereby the bar may prising a load-holder, a support therefor on which the load-holder is movable, a weighing means forming a connection between the load-holder and its su ort, and additional connecting means estab ishing a sliding connection between the said load-holder and its su port, said additional connecting means being detachable.
- 3. The combination of supporting means, pivoted gripping arms, means for suspending said gripping arms from said supporting means, the sup orting means being capable of movement rel atively to said gripping arms, and additional connections between said supporting means. and the gripping arms whereby a movement of the supporting means will serve'to open or close the gripping arms, said connections being detachable to free the gripping arms from the control of the supporting means.
4. An ice tongs, comprising pivoted carrier arms, pivoted gripping arms for engaging a block or ice, weighing devices arranged in connection with the said gri ping arms to carried thereindicate the weight oi the loa by, and operative connections between the carrier arms and gripping arms.
5. An ice tongs, comprising pivoted carrier arms, pivoted gripping arms suspended from the pivot of the carrier, arms, and connections between said carrier arms and gripping arms at a point removed from the pivot arms to be 0 of the latter to open and close the grippin tongs by movements pf the carrier arms, sai connectionsbeing detachable.
6. Tongs comprising two pairs arms, one pair and'the ivot the'reofbeing movable relatively 'to t e other pair, a weighing meansforming a connection between said pairs of arms. I
7. Tongs, comprising a pair of pivoted carrying arms, a separate pair ofpivoted I ping arms movable with t ieir pivot relat ve y to'the carrying arms, a weighing means interposed between said pairs of arms, and a fas-v tener for locking one pair of arms in fixed relation to the other.
8. The combination of a carrier comprising a pair of pivotally connected arms, a loadholder comprising a se arate pair ofpivotally connected arms, t e latter pair having respectively asliding movement on the arms of the first pair and controlled by said carrier ened or closed, and a weighing device estab ishing connection between the respectivepivots of said arms.
intestimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM BALLARD MOORE.
