Description

UNTTED sTATEs PATENT oEEio.
HENRY SIDLE, OF DILLSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
APPARATUS FOR BORING HUBS FOR BOXES.
Specication of Letters Patent No. 8,761, dated February 24, 1852.
` To all whom 'it may concern.
'the purpose of boring the hubs and regulating the boxes of wagon, carriage, railway car, and other vehicle wheels.
To enable others to make use of my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. t
`I construct my auger and box regulator with an iron cylinder in two parts marked `1 and 2 which connect in the center by means of a socket and screw marked O so as to increase or diminish the length of said cylinder as the case or sizeof the hub may re quire, with three oblong holes in each part of the cylinder marked A for the reception of the bits marked at each side of the socket and screw and are fed by means of said socket and Screw and fastened by iron wedges and so arranged as to enlarge or lessen the bore. Together with two cast iron arms marked 3 and 4 through which each part of the cylinder passes with thumb screws marked 5 and 6 in the center of each arm so as to prevent either bit from boring when necessary with four sliding blocks on said arms marked 7, 8, 9 and l0. and iron rods marked ll and l2 so as to secure and fasten the hub. The cylinder has a gage and screw marked 13 and 14 at each end on the outside of the cast iron arms so adjusted as to set and regulate the bit or auger to bore the exact depth of the boxes and also make the bits cutout the chip so as it will leave the hub perfectly level for the reception of the boxes. The auger is put in motion by turning the cranks which are on each end of the cylinder.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The iron shaft in two parts with the socket and screw in the center marked O so as to increase or diminish the length of said shaft and also to feed the bits as described whereby a hub may be clamped, bored at both ends for the boxes, and removed from the machine without removing the cutters from the shaft, replacing them, or changing i ends of the hub or shaft.
