Be it known that I, Tnonas Rown, citizen of the United States, residing at Dollar Bay, in the county of liloughton and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l Vater-Economizers for Jigs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in jigs or analogous ore concentrating machines, and the invention has for its object a water economizer attachment for jigs consisting essentially of a main hutch or trough with partially closed partitions so arranged, in connection with outlets at the bottom for the discharge of the sand or other material and outlets in front at the top for the surface water, that the water 5 may be reused again and'again, instead of being wasted. By this means the overflow from a series of jigs may be caught and material separated from the water so that the water is fit for use from one jig to the next, thereby effecting economies in the art.
W'ith this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the'invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts which I shall now fully describe and then point out the novel features in the accompanying claims.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to ac p1ire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an apparatus embodying the principles of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is an end view; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the sections of partitions detached. Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating my water cconomizer and its relation to a Fig. 6 is a side elevation of two jigs with the water economizer interposed between them.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to ,the drawings, 1 designates a receptacle which may be mounted upon any suitable framework or supported in any desired manner, and it is preferably provided l with a rear sloping side 1, which contracts the lower end, and said receptacle is also preferably formed substantially wedge shaped in front elevation with the apex of the wedge pointing downward. The receptacle 1 may be divided into several compartments, in the present instance three being shown, namely, a middle compartment A and two side compartmcnts B and (l. The partitions which produce these compartments are sectional in character, one section being designated 2 and the other 3. They preferably extend from the front wall to the rear wall of the receptacle throughout their entire extent.
The section 2 extends from the top of the receptacle preferably in a vertical plane for l; a portion of its length and terminates short of the sloping side wall of the receptacle and is provided with an inwardly bent extremity 2 which is spaced from such sloping wall. The two extremities 2 of the respective sections 2 extend towards each other as shown. Each section 2 of the partitions is also formed with an outwardly extending overhanging arm t which extends outwardly and downwardly in an inclined direction and is provided with a vertical downwardly projecting extremity A spaced from the main portion 2 and terminating short of the receptacle 1. \Vithin the space between the parts 4 and 2, the other section 3 is located, such section extending upwardly preferably in a vertical plane from the bottomof the sloping side wall of the receptacle and terminating short of, but preferably close to the m crhanging arm 4-, thereby producing a circuitous passage from each of the side compartments B and C to the middle compartment A. said sloping sides with outlets 5 that are located close to the lower ends of the partition sections 4, with another outlet 6 in its front wall and at the extreme lower point thereof and with two other outlets 7 that are within the con-ipartmeut A, near the upper edge of the said receptacle. In addition to these outlets, the receptacle is priwidcd with two overflow launders S which extend downwardly along the sloping sides, as shown. The receptacle is formed at each side of its upper edge with a recess 9 communicating with the upper end of the respective laundcrs 8. The said overflow launders and outlets 5 and 6 are intended to empty or discharge into a waste launder (not shown).

The water and what fine sand. it may yet contain eventually rises over the sections 3 of the partitions and thence flows down underneath the innermost section 2 and their extremities 2 into the middle settling compartment A,
the remaining fine sand thence passing out through the discharge outlet 6, while'the clear water passes out through the orifices or outlets 7 into the next jig for reuse. The surplus water flows ofi through the launders 8, the recesses 9 being located in a plane just above the orifices 7.
Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, which illustrate the relation between my invention and the jig or jigs, it is to be understood that the pipe 10 supplies the jig D with plunger water which is forced up through screens over which the material from the trough 11 is passed, the material being subjected to the jigging motion caused by each stroke of the plunger 12. All of this water and crushed rock passes over the end 13 of the jig into my improved water economizer and all the plunger water-is separated from the crushed rock and flows out through the outlets or the pipes 7 into the next jig E for reuse. The water which flows into the feed from the trough 1] passes out through the water economizer at the outlets Sand 6 into the trough 11 or as much of the water as may be needed to wash. the crushed rock away.
In some parts of the the whole tailings from one pass over one other and sometimes more. In this case the jigs are set low enough to admit of my water economizer passing the tailings on to the next jig, the clear water passing into the plunger compartment. This may be repeate' as often as the number of in use. The pipe 10 and the branch pipes 11 are preferably provided with valves so as to regulate the flow of water.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided means whereby a considerable amount of the water used in the concentrating process may be saved so that the water may flow from one jig to the next and be used again and again,
by placing the jigs in stepped relation to each other, as on an inclined floor.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, a receptacle for the reception of tailings, said receptacle having slopin side walls and formed in its front wall at the bottom thereof with a discharge outlet and also formed near the upper edge of its front wall with outlet orifices, and overflow launders connected to the sides of said receptacle and extending down underneath said sides and discharging at the lower ends thereof.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, a receptacle provided with partitions dividing it into two side compartments and a middle compartment, the side compartments being designed for the inflow, the said. partitions being sectional and providing circuitous overflow passages from the side compartments to the middle compartment, saidreceptacle being formed in each of said side compartments, and the middle compartments and at the bottom thereof with discharge outlets and also within the middle coinpartment and near its upper edge with outlet orifices for clear water, and said receptacle also formed with overflows communicating with the side compartments, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a receptacle provided with a sectional partition extending thereacross and producing a plurality of compartments, one section of said partition extending from the upper edge of the receptacle downwardly with its lower end angularly disposed and spaced from the bottom wall of the receptacle and said section also provided with an oppositely extending overhanging arm formed with a downwardly projecting extremity and the other seotionextending upwardly from the bottom of said receptacle within the space between the downward extremity of said arm and the first named section, whereby a circuitous overflow passage is formed from one compartment to the neXt, and said receptacle formed at its bottom with discharge outlets and near its top with outlet orifices for clear water.
