If the thread were drawn straight from the needle across. the tongue, it would be very liable to catch therein, and it would be diffi cult to get it out. Theflare between the left handside of the. tongue and the presser foot keeping it. from catching there, and at the I presser foot under any desired thickness of claim as new and desire to secure by Let- ",tersPatent, is
,"j-the fabric, a presser foot having a recess 10- Q -cated in the path of travel of said thread body, forces the thread along on the tongue 1 as it is drawn taut, and this has the effect of dra it out of the V-shaped slot. Were it not or the fact that the left hand side'of :10
the tongue of the presser foot is made upon the peculiar curve starting at a point opposite the needle, the thread would catch in the v-v'shapedfs'lot, and would not come out, but the, drawing of the thread over. a point higher than the'sides of the V slot has the effect of .s'ame tlme, allows the looper in its travel to pass over the side of the presser foot, without en agin with it. a
4 t wilIbe understood that I do not wish to be limitedto the exact details of construction, the essentials of the invention being that the presser foot has the notched tongue,
or the notch adjacent the tongue, so that the looper has sufiicient clearance over the -fgo0ds; and also that the notchis so formed that the thread will not catch in the notch but will slip over it onto the tongue.
Having thus described my invention, what 1.111 a sewing machine having -stitch forming mechanism including a device for laying a thread upon the upper surface of laying device, 'andupon the top side of the bearing surface of said, f ot, saidrecess being so arranged as that threadwill be deflected out of it; substa... slly as described.
