WALTER E. BARNES, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO UNION SPECIAL SEWING MACHINE CO., ,OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FOLDING GUIDE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
Application filed March 5, 1901. Serial No. 49,706.
Be it known that I, IVALTER E. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Guides for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to folding guides for attachment to sewing machines, and the particular object is to provide what I term a concealed stitch folder, for use especially in connection with the rufliing and sewing machine, of the type shown in Letters Patent No. 655,143, granted R. G. Woodward, on July 31st, 1900, as herein shown, however, using one needle instead of two, the purpose being to provide a folding guide which has a guiding and folding recess for the upper layer of fabric, designed to form the upper thickness 0f the double yoke of a shirt or other garment, a second guiding recess below and opposed to the first guiding and folding recess, and adapted to guide the edge of an intermediate layer of fabric designed to form the back or body of the shirt or other garment, and which is ruflied and a third guiding recess below the second adapted to guide a third layer of fabric, the three fabrics being secured together by a line of stitching, the third layer of fabric when folded back on the line of stitching as a hinge, forming the second thickness of the double yoke of the shirt or other garment.
The invention, therefore, consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a folding guide constructed in accordance with myinvention; Fig. 2 is an end view of Fig. 1; Fig. .2 is an end view, with the adjustable ortion removed; Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 1 Fig. 4 is a detail showing the manner of folding and guiding the layers of fabric in this folding guide; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the lower layer of fabric folded back to conceal the stitch.
In these drawings, A represents the base piece of the folding guide, provided with elongated openings a, whereby the same is adjustably attached in a well known manner by set screws to the work machine.
Projectin upwardly from the base piece is a standard I3, with a projecting portion C, beneath which portion C,and the base piece is formed the recess 1) for the lower piece of fabric 0, which forms the lower layer of the double yoke of the garment.
The height of the recess 6 is regulated by the angle plate D, which is vertically adj ustable by means of the elongated slots d, in the vertical part of the angle plate, and the clamping screws 6, which pass through the slots and into the front edge of the part C. Upon the top of the part C is secured the plate of a sewing usual stripper plate f, which co-acts with a rufiier blade in the usual way.
The folding guide for the middle piece or part of the fabric to be ruffled, and the upper fabric is formed as follows: Secured to the part C is a folder, having the vertical guiding wall g; the horizontal wall it, and the upwardly and outwardly turned lip 71, the horizontal'wall h, the vertical wall 9, and the top of the part C, forming a recess 7r to guide the main part Z of the fabric to be sewed, which part 7c is also fed over the stripper plate and ruffled. Projecting from the wall 9, is a rib m, having right and left horizontally projecting plates n, 0, the one 0 projecting beneath the lip i, and forming with'i and m, a folding and guiding recess for the up er piece of fabric p. The said part 0 also as a projecting downwardly turned tongue 9, which holds the folded thickness of fabric and that which is to be ruffled close together, until they come under the action of the sewing machine presser foot.
In Figs. 4 and 5, I have illustrated the manner in which the thicknesses of fabric are folded and guided in the use of my attachment, in which go represents the upper fabric, or layer, of yoke, Z the main piece of fabric or back of shirt, and c, the lower layer guided to the stitch forming mechanism, so that the parts are secured together by the line of stitching s; the. lower layer being then folded upon the line of stitching, as shown in Fig. 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A folding guide for attachment to sewing machines, comprising a base piece, a standard rising therefrom, a portion projecting laterally from said standard, the base piece, projecting portion and standard forming a guiding recess, a vertical wall projecting above the said standard and having a horizontal extension above said laterally projecting portion and extending in the same direction, the vertical wall, horizontal extension and said projecting portion forming a recess parallel with and opening in the same direction .as the first recess, a plate above the horizontal extension forming a recess between it and the horizontal extension, and means for folding the fabric around said plate and guiding it in said recess; substan tially as described.
2. A folding guide for attachment to sewing machines, comprising a base piece, ,a standard rising therefrom, a portion rojecting laterally from said standard, t e base piece, projecting portion and standard form ing a guiding recess, a vertical Wall projecting above the said standard and having a horizontal extension above said laterally projecting portion and extending in the same direction, the vertical wall, horizontal extension and said projecting portion forming a recess parallel with and opening in the same direction as the first recess, said horizontal extension being provided with an upwardly and outwardly turned lip, with a rib having right and left projecting plates, one of said recess,
which extends beneath the lip, thus forming a recess which opens in a direction opposite to the other two recesses; substantially as described.
3. A folding guide for attachment to sewing machines, comprising a base piece, a standard rising therefrom, a portion projecting laterally from said standard forming a recess between the projecting portion and the base piece, means for adjusting the height of and a folder attached to the standard having oppositely extending guiding recesses; substantially as described.
4. A folding guide for attachment to sewing machines, comprising a base piece, a standard rising therefrom, a portion projecting laterally from said standard forming a re cess between the projecting portion and the base piece, an angle plate having a flange vertically adjustable on the laterally projecting portion, whereby the height of the recess may be adjusted, and a folder attached to the standard having oppositely extending guiding recesses; substantially as described,
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER E. BARNES.
