UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLAF HETLESAETER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO ALLIS-CHALMERS COMPANY, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
STEAM-SHOVEL A-FRAME AND CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
Application filed September 15, 1905. Serial No. 278,563.
Be it known that I, OLAF HETLEsAETER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam Shovel A-Frames and Connections, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in a laterally stiffening member supporting guys for an over-hanging arm or boom.
More particularly applied to excavators, this feature is termed an A-frame, and is in the structure disclosed a steel forging.
By my improvements I produce a strong structure having a neat and compact connection for the guys, which is not liable to Work loose.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a front elevation partly broken away, of my improved A-frame With saddle or cap therefor; Fig. 2
is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 8 is a rear elevation of the guy connection or saddle; and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a swingably mounted overhanging arm for an excavator or crane, showing how my A-frame is applied thereto.
The one-piece member 1 has the spaced legs serving to laterally stiffen the guys which are attached to the connection 2 at the bent portion of this one-piece A-frame. As there is not proportionally as great a strain on the frame at the bend, this portion is reduced to facilitate bending and thus the cost of manufacture is reduced.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s,
l. A one-piece A-frame having a reduced portion at the bend.
2. A one-piece A-frame havin a reduced portion at the bend, and a saddle having a continuous recess for the A-frame.
3. The combination of a support, an A- frame on the support, a saddle formed with a single recess for reception of the A-frame apex, and guys connecting to the saddle for staying the A-frame.
d. The combination of a support, a onepiece A frame on the support, a saddle formed With a continuous recess into Which the apex of the A-frame is housed, and guys connecting to the saddle for staying the A- frame.
5. The combination of a support, a onepiece A-frame on the support and having a reduced portion at the apex, a saddle on the A-frame at the reduced portion, a boom on the support, and guys for staying the boom and A-frame.
6. The combination of an A-frame bent to form an apex and having a reduced portion at the bend, and a saddle attached to the A- frame at the reduced portion.
7. A forged one-piece A-frame having a reduced portion at the forged apex.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
OLAF HETLESAETER.
Witnesses:
