A further object of te invention is the provision of reciprocatory feed-devices operating to detach the lowermost sheet from a pile, as will be hereinafter explained.

Other objects of the invention will be hereinafter set forth.

Designated by 10 is the driving-shaft of the machine, said shaft being supported in boxes of the frame and carrying a pulley 11, or other instrumentality to which power may be applied. Gears 12, 12 are secured to shaft 10 between the side plates of the frame, and loosely sleeved on said shaft adjacent to is an arm 13. Mounted on studs 14, 14 of said arms are idlers 15, 15 in constant mesh with the gears 12, 12, and journaled on other studs 16, 16 carried by the arms are pinions 17 17, the latter meshin with gears on feedrollers hereinafter descri ed. After passing through the arms 13, 13 and securing the pinions 17, 17 thereto, the ends of the sthds 16, 16 are threaded into links 18, 18, the lat.- terhaving bushed hubs 19, 19 sleeved loosely upon an oscillatory suction-rod or shaft 20, said shaft serving to connect the links and to rock therein, as shown in Fig. 6. This shaft 20 is shown tubular for a portion of its length as at 21, although it ma be of pipe-form throughout, and is provi ed with ports 22, and surroundingsaid ports with a picker 23 having openings 24 communicating with the ports 22. Sleeves 25 and 26 are mounted on the shaft 20 between the picker 23 and the links 18, 18, and each sleeve is provided with a gear 25, 26, respectively, in mesh with the pinions 17 and 17 and with a roller 25, 26 respectively, as illustrated in Fig. 6.
Secured to shaft 10 is an eccentric 27 the strap of which is connected by a rod 28 with an arm 29 projecting from a rock-shaft 3O journaled in boxes of the frame. Rigid with said rock- shaft arearms 31, 32, which are gear 12 is an arm 13, and adjacent to gear 12' articulated at their free ends to links 33 and described. In these slides is journaled the parti-tubulargshaft 20, and a shaft 38 is mounted in boxes 39 fitted in slots 39 of the slides. Springs 40 bear against the boxes and the'inner sides of cap-plates 41 closing the ends of the slots in said slides. Pinions 42 and 43 rigid with said shaft 38, are in constant mesh with the gears 25, 26 of sleeves 25, 26,- and intermediate said pinions the shaft is provided with rolls 44, 45, alwa s bearing under yielding pressure against t e rolls 25 26 of said sleeves. A bar 46 is 'secured to the slides 35 and 36, and it affords a support for angle-levers 47 48, which arethrough the bar 46, and at their rear endsare ed to receive nuts 54, which act as three stops. These rods are connected at their forward ends to a buffer-plate 55, and are surrounded between said plate and the bar 46 each by a coiled spring 56, the stress of said spring tendmg normally to force the plate forward, so that it will yield when 1n the o eration of the devices it strikes the end of t e ile 9, and therefore, will act as a buffer for t at portion of the end of said pile located between the buifer-rods or pins 51.
Designated bfi 57 is a plate for aiding in separating the ottom sheet" from the pile and this plate is of wedge-shape and will hereinafter be termed the separator. At
its rear end the separator is widened and is slotted at 58 to receive screws 59 by which it is secured to the cross-bar 46. A thumbscrew 60 passes through a vertical flange 61, of said separator, is swiveled therein, and its threaded portion enters a nut in bar 46, thereby enabling the separator to be adjusted back and forth as desired, to locate it properl to Iperform its office.

In the modification illustrated in Fig. 9-all the parts of the mechanism are the same as in the other views, with the exception of the separator for aiding in the seizure of the lowermost sheet from the pile. This separator in shop parlance is'known as the dagger, and its function is, as above stated, to assist emcee in the removal of the sheet, and to prevent more than one sheet from being seized by the icker. 5 1.

Rising from a side-plate of the machineframe is a bracket 70, and in a bearing 71 in the forward end of said bracket is journaled a rock-shaft 72. Rigid with the rock-shaft 72 is an arm 73, and in a bearing 74 at the free end of the arm is firmlysecured a stub 75 from which depends a separator or dagger 76, in the form of a curved blade. An
projects rearwardly therefrom, and to said arm is articulated a link 78, forked at 79 to straddle the driving-shaft 10. A roller 80 is mounted on a stud of the link, and said roller is in contact with the periphery of a cam 81 rigid With the driving-shaft. This cam is so shaped that when the picker 23 arrives beneath the pile, the link 78 will be actuated thereby rocking the short shaft 72, and carrying the dagger or separator 76 downward to co6perate with the picker in removing a sheet. As said dagger moves down its curved under surface will come into contact with the sheet seized by the icker, and cause it to be cleanly separated om the pile. From what has been stated, it will be seen that the separatorand picker move synchronously, that one aids the other in the sheet-separating operation, and that the separator as it moves in an arcuate ath lifts the pile away from the detached s eet. While particular mechanism is shown for actuating the swinging separator, the invention is not limited thereto, for other mechanical combinations may be employed as substitutes if desired.
In the illustrations given the feeding mechanism is shown arranged at a certain angle, but-it is distinctly to be understood spect for it may be otherwise located if de-' sired.

110 that the invention is not limited in this re- I slides 35 and 36 are simultaneously actuated to force the buffer-rods 51 and the buffer-' plate 55 against the end of the pile, and to carry the separator 57 between the lower sheet and the remainder of the pile. As this takes place the pinions 14, 14v roll over the the pump in the tube 65 and hollow picker shaft 20, and that when the picker is in-the position represented in Fig. 4 it will attract the lower sheet of the pile. As the slides move inward the pinion 62 of picker-shaft 20 engages the fixed rack 63, and at the limit of their stroke, saidpicker will be rocked to the position illustrated in Fig. 8, and the end of the sheet carried by said picker will be inserted between the continuously and rapidly-- rotating rollers 25 26 44 and 45, and will be fed by them to the machine with which the improved mechanism is in use. When the sheet is grasped by the rollers the separator 57 aids in stripping it from the ile and in guiding it as it is advanced bysair rollers.
The continuously driven feed-rollers constitute an important feature of the invention, and the arrangement of the feed-mechanism as a whole is compact, of simple construction, and is reliable in operation.
While a suction-picker is shown for detaching'and feeding the sheets from the bottom of the pile, the invention is not'limited thereto, for by slight modifications the mechanism may be arranged to feed from the top of the pile; nor is the invention lim. ited to the precise arrangement of operating mechanism shown and described, for various modifications rhay be made that will be within the purview thereof. So too, the form of the picker may be varied, and the mechanism may be arranged in vertical,
horizontal or other desired positions without departure from the invention. Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 4 1. 27. In sheet-feeding mechanism, the combination, with a pneumatic picker and-with means for actuating the same, of a reoiprocatory support for the picker; a swinging separator movable synchronously with the picker;
a link, and connections for actuating said separator; means for operating the link; and continuously-driven feed-rolls to which the sheet is delivered.
