Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
Application filed April 23. 1907. Serial No. 369,837-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAo N. Bmornmr, a citizen of Canada, residing at Melrose Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Oh ping Devices; and I do hereby declare that t e following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying thawing, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure l is a perspective view showin all of the different parts properly connected together. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the blade. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the blade holding headf Fig. 4 is an end view showing the op osite end from that illustrated in Fig. 1. ig. 5 is. an enlarged longitudinal section showing the different parts properly assembled. Fig. 6 is a detachedpers ective view showing the blade holder an its different parts disconnected. Fig. 7 is a detached erspective view of the blade showing the blade 1n a difierent position from that shown in Fig, 2. Fig. 8 is a view showing a portion of the housin one of the guard fingers and an end view 0 a portion of the cuttm blade.
The present invention has re ationto hair cutters, and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter described and particularly, pointed out in the claims.
Similar numerals of reference indicate cor-f responding parts in all the figures of the drawing. i v- In the accompanying drawings, 1 repre sents the housing, which is preferably of the form shown and is provided upon its longitudinal sides withthe guard fingers 2, which guard fingers are spaced from'each other and are what might be termed comb teeth. The housing 1 1s. provided with the integral flanges 3, which flan es are preferably formed by bending or foFding portions of the metal so as to produce the flanges or guides, which folded portions may be s aced a short distance or they may be folde upon themselves as the only object to be provided foris to provide a guide for theblade carrying head 4, which blade carrying head is pro vided with the grooves 5, which grooves receive theflanges 3; but this order may be reversed without departing from the-nature pin 18, whic carrying head 4 is located the lug 6, the inner face of which is inclined for the purpose hereinafter described. Upon the opposite end of the blade holding head 4 is pivotally attached the clip 7, which clip is rovided at its u per end with the bevele flange 8. The 0 1p 7 is provided with the projection 9, which projection is located in alinement with the groove l0formed in the bottom or under side or blade holding head 4. The clip 7 is pivotally connected to the head by means of the cross or fulcrumedin 21.
.For the purpose of norm'ally olding the 'clip 7 in position to hold the blade 11 in proper relative position upon the guard the spring 12 is provided, which spring presses upon the extension 9 and holds the beveled end 8 of the clip 7 in snu contact in oneof the recesses 13 of the blade .11 so that there can be no accidental displacement of' the blade or any relative movement as between the blade and the blade holdin head 4 and at the same time hold the bla e in snug contact with the uard. The opposite end of the blade is held by means of the inclined faced lug which is seated in one of the recess 14.. It will be understood that by the action of the spring 12 the clip will press-the end of the blade endwise and by reason'of the inclined faces of the clip 7 and the lug 6, the blade will be pressed downward and in close contact with the" ard fingers 2 which are formed integral wit the housing 1.
For the purpose of imparting a reci ro-' eating movement to the b ade 11, said b ade is provided-with the headed pin 16, to which headed pin is pivotally attached the link 17, I which link is ivotally attached to the crank l i crank pin is secured to the driving head 19, which driving head is connected-in any convenient and well known manner to the power shaft 20, which power shaft may be driven by the motor 21*, or by any other source of .power. When it is desired to remove the blade '11 the free end of the spring 12 is pressed into the groove 10, thereby allowing the clip 7 to rock or swing outward so as to disenga e it from the recess 13, after which the b ade can be easily removed. For the purpose of providing clearance for the fulcrum pm 21 the blade carrying head 4 is cut away as illustrated in Fig. 6. It is of importance that the distance between the cutting edge of the blade 11 and the faces of 110 the guard fingers be varied so as 'to provide for varying the depth of hair cut and also the amount of hair to be cut, and in order to provide for this feature and advantage one edge of the blade is so beveled that the cutting line-will be at one side of the center of the blade or in other words the cutting edge will be nearer one face of the blade than the other or in other Words the cutting edge will be brought nearer to or farther away from the surface of the guard fingers. This result is brought about by reversing the cutting blade 11.
It will be understood that by forming the blade as above described it is provided with two parallel cuttin edges and the cutting edges located in di 'erent horizontal planes.
Having fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
1. In a hair cutting device the combina tion of a housing provided With guide ways and guard fingers, a blade carrying head, guided by the guide ways of the housing, one end of said carrying head provided with an inclined faced lug, a pivoted clip located at the opposite end of the carrying head and a spring adapted to hold the clip in engagement with the blade and means for imparting a reciprocating movement to the blade, siublstantially as and for the purpose specii er 2; In a hair cutting device, the combination of a housing a blade carrying head carried and guided by said housing, a cutting blade provided with parallel cutting edges, one of said edges located at the horizontal center line and the opposite edge located at one side of the horizontal line, and means for imparting reciprocating movement to the blade, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
