The semaphore is etteched to e lever,49 which is medie-ily pivoted on s. bolt 52 set in nprightsfon the post till' The end of the from l an lever t9 has en oriiice to receive the upper' end of the vertice-l rod 4S, and hes -e small ernennt oi" play thereon between nuts secured thereto. The lower` end of the-rod 48 is supplied with e. weight 47 adapted to exercise stress upon the semaphore tonormallykee it extended in its horizonte-l signaling posiltion, the end of seid rod below the'weight hevinffe pivotal connection et 46 to the lever A 'record properly mede will in@ Y roo lio mounted by 41-42, the latter pivoted at 4S to some iixed body. The lower end of the bell-crank lever L1i-42 is pivoted at 45 to a link 40, which in turn is pivoted to the lower end of' the bellcrank lever @87"37, the latter pivoted at its angle to some lifted body, and having its upper member vpivo'tcd to the lower end of a pitrnan 35, whose upper end is pivoted on a cranlcwstud 35 connected between the disks 53 and 4. The disk 53 is fixed to the. shaft to which the outer and smaller disk 69 is iXed, said shalt and disks being rotated by means ci the crank 33 outside of the casing-box- The crank-stud 35 causes a like rotation of the innermost and largest disk 4, the latter being mounted on a stud shaft 71 proj ecting from a bearing in the partition oi' the casing.
The numeral 13 denotes a pawl pivoted to stud on the inner face of the casing, and adapted to engage with the single notch 34 in the outer disk 69 at a certain position on its circumferential edge, whose use will be eX plained later. l
To the inner face ol the innermost disk 4 near its edge is attached a boss 14, adapted to enter the path oi the reciprocatory plunger S and move the latter outward at a certain moment in the action of the device, the plunger having an antifriction roller thereon to lfurnish a :trictionless contact with said boss. At a predetermined point on the circumferential edge of the disk 4 a large right-angled notch 5 is located to receive the contacting lower corner oi the slider 1. This corner is supplied with an anti-friction roller 6 to insure rictionless contact with the edges oi' the notch 5 in the disk 4. The forward portion olI the slider passes through an orifice in the iront oi the casing and is supplied with a push-buttonhcad- T he rear portion of said slider is bent upwardly and then rearwardly in a horizontal member 2 the vertical upward movement oi the latter being` limited by a stop 3. T he upwardly bent portion oi saidslider has a forwardly extending branch which forms a stop for the vertical slid cr when the latter is in its lowerinost position. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be scen that the slider 54, which moves in a bearing opening in the lixed block is suran armature 25 adapted to be attracted to and move into contact with the poles ot an electro-magnet 24-5S in the' usual manner. An angularly bent arm 29 extends from the lower part of the slider 54, and when the latter moves upward drawn by the electro-magnet is received ndthin a slot 65 in said blockBZ. The outer end of the arm 29 has a short upwardly-extending member 63 received within a staple or loop 64011 said block 32, Pivotally mounted in bearings in the iront casing and in the block 32 is a short rcclosbaft 07, whose outer end without the furnished with crank The inter-mediale n ci' said .shalt has a laterally projecting arm 62 furnished with insulated electrodes 59 and 61 adapted to contact with the electrodes 57 and 58 mountedin the block 32 when the arm is in its loworinost position, and thus close a circuit to be hereinafter described. When the crank 20 is rocked over in the reverse direction theelectrodes 61 and 59 come in contact with the fixed electrodes 55 and 56 mounted in said block 32 on the opposite side of the shaft. A short arm bearing' a counterweight 31 is laterally extended from the shaft di rectly opposite to the arm 62, and tends to keep said arm 62 elevated out ot contact withA the electrodes in the block 32. The upturned member 63 of the arm 20, in a certain position of the slider 54 acts as a stop for the arm 62 preventing the latter irom arriving `at its lowermost position to eiect Contact between the electrodes thereon and those on the block 32 thereunder. When the slider 1 is in the position indicated in Fig. 1,. its rearniost lower corner is locked into thev notch 5 in the disk 4, eliectually preventing rotation oi the latter. The slider 1 cannot be movedv forward so as to clear said notch and permit rotation oi the disk 4, unless the circuit is closed through the electro-magnet 24, thus elevating the armature 25 with its attached slider 54, so that the lower end of the latter will pass from the path ci the member 2, llflhen the slider 1 is drawn forward, the mechanism is in readiness to perform a registration7 which may be of two kinds as hereinafter described.
ln the inner front lower corner of the' box is a small receptacle or boxingl in which is mounted a rotatable spool 15 enwrapped with a supply ot thin paper tape 16. 'lhis tape, as depicted in l"1g.`4, may be oi uniform length with other tapes ol the kind, and have its rear surface printed with large characters or other arbitrar j devices in or der to divide it into a predetermined number ci spaces of equal lengths ditl'erentlydesignated, to prevent alteration or delaccinent to change a certain record thereon. vEach station is given some arbitrarily determined character or characters 111, such characters being written or printed on each equal division of the rear surface he ta ie, This countersigned character on each ivision is a further saieouard against alteration or substitution of the ta e. The tape 16 is coni ducted outA oi the oxing through a narrow slot and between the rollers 108 and 109 and between toothed guard-combs 103 into a flattened conduit 18. The combs 103 have sharp teeth 11.0, and are mounted o posite each other en ,pivoted studs 107 so that the teeth bear against leach other with the thin tape 16 between them. lt is obvious that any attempt to tain er with such tape by drawing it down wou d be intile, the sharp teeth 110 would in that event engage the iso ward end of 515 on the sin benin cent the cutting and snclr orilnwe 1s provided for the use of not be how-ere4i vided with gear placed at a err erases n o slr. gli. secure sing and a ilat conduit d tin n into hen 23, whose iront may' l i ol glass if desired, vbut such .iront he g hinged at the bottom, canordinarilyon account of the catch en creamed at 91 te a hearing .projecting from the inner surface the box cover.

Our improved device is operated inthe-f Afollowing manner. In the event that a train is approaching a station having'the de vice a--b therein from the West, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 7, and is about to pass said station, the operator therein having Ahis semaphore 50 in the up or warningto stop positlon, as indicated by the full lines in Fig.` 1, in the event that said ope'rator has no orders requiring a stop and vdesires' to, lower the semaphore to its position indicated by the dotted lines to permit the train to pass Without stopping, tor lat the station next lto theeast bytelehone or telegraph to give him his assistance in completing an electrical circuit throu h the device before an adj ustmentof the meollanism can be madeto lower said signal. IAs will be seen by reference to the diagrams in Figs. 5 and?, each circuit is broken in two places, for instance, in the case herei'nbefore supposed, one break in the circuit will be in box c and the other iii box a at the station 'I to the east thereof. lhebreakin each case occurs in that part of each'. mechanism between the electrodes 59 and 61v on the-arm Iset in the block'32. operator cannot-close the circuit himself, but requires the assistance or connlvance of an# he must first notify the 'opera- '62, 'andthe electrodes 57 and 58 or 55 and 56 This being the case one v other operator atv a distant station to'electl i the pur ose.
ive the circuit,v v he closes the break at his en by rocking the When the operator at thev cleshaft 67 so that the bar 62 will move down Ward and cause the electrodes thereon 'to contactlwith'thc electrodes 157-and 158 (the latter corresponding with numbered 57 and 58 in' Fig. 3), ,which closes -the electrodes.
' the proper subdivision '7 7 of the tape 16 with the punch 11. At'this juncture, said operator turns the crank 33 rotating the disk 69 till the pawl 13 engages the notch. 34, and the Amovement of the disk 53 actuates the lever 36, and the intermediate connections between said lever and the semaphore 50, lowering said semaphore, thus signaling the approaching train to pass, the block being clear ahead, and no orders to stop, The continued rotation of said crank causes the disk 4- and its boss 14 to also rotate until said boss contacts with and drives forward the plunger 8, causing its punch l() to make a record 75 on the'opposite side of the subdivision 77 of the tape 16, and the two records on one subdivision thus indicate the fact that the train was allow ed to pass without orders, and that the semaphore was duly lowered. 'lhe continued rotation of the disk 4 again brings the notch 5 to its former position, where the. spring 105 causes the slider to again Contact with said notch, and the cireuit'being broken through the electro-magnet, the slider 54 again locks the slider 1 against thenotch. A pawl 112 pivoted to the casing and serve, to engage the notch 34 in the disk 69, and prevent any attempt ol the operator to tamper with the mechanism, by trying to reverse the rotation ol the disks to change the position of the semaphore arm 50 without a record beingl taken. When the slider 1 is pushed back by the spring 105, its connected toothed bar causes a rotation of the train of gea-rs and the toothed drums, and moves up the tape 16 to uncover another subdivision 77 for record. `When the semaphore lremains up, and the approaching train stops l'or orders, before the operator can give a clearance card he has to assure himself that the block ahead is clear, and he does this in the following wey. lle calls up the operator at the next statipn ahead, and ii the block is clear ahead the latter operator closes the circuit in the manner hereinbelo-re described. 'the iirst operator then pulls out the released slider l, thus making a. record on the tape with its bracketed punch l1, and this record by itself then indicates that the operator has properly ascertained that the block ahead is clear and is his record authority for issuing' a clearance card. ln the event that a train should run by a raised semaphore, the coiiufidencc ol' a blank record l l i l 1.
