To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. MAcLiN, of Knoxville, Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dump-Cars, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification.
The present invention relates to dump cars having tiltable bodies and displaceable side boards or doors, and more particularly to an improved mechanism for operating the side boards or doors when the car body is tilted; the specific objects of the invention being to provide improved means for forcing the lower edge of the door outward when the car is inclined, until said door occupies a position substantially parallel with the floor of the car body, whereby the space through which the load is discharged is enlarged and the dumping accordingly facilitated; and to provide a simple mechanism that will automatically lock the side board or door in its vertical or closed position when the car body is in its normal, rlghted position.

The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Fi ure 1 is an end elevation of a car provide with the improved device, the car body and attached parts being shown in their righted position by full lines and in the tilted or dumping position by dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, being a view taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the wheels of a truck of any suitableconstruction provided with side beams 2 and end beamsS; and 4 indicates sills arranged centrally and longitudinally of the truck, the same being secured to end beams 3. Mounted on said sills, and connected to the bottom 5 of the car, is a plurality of hinges 6 of any suitable construction, around which the car body may be tilted or inclined until the bottom thereof contacts with the beveled face of either of beams 7which latter may, be mounted on beams 2 and are of a length substantially equal to that of the under-framing of the car-or any other suitable or desired sto s.
The car body is provided with fixed walls or ends 8 and with displaceable walls or side boards 9, which latter in their normal," vertical or closed position rest upon and are supported by the fioor of the car body.
The mechanism associated with each displaceable wall or side board is the same, and identical at both ends of the car; and it will, accordingly, be necessary only to describe the mechanism at one end of the car for one wall or side board. A link 10 is hinged at one extremity to the displaceable wall or side board 9, preferably at a point 11 near the top of the end thereof, and at its other extremity to a relatively fixed part of the car-body, such as the fixed wall 8, preferably at a cen tral point 12. There is likewise hinged to said side board, preferably at a point near the bottom thereof, one member 13 of a toggle, which is secured to its other member 14 by a pin 15, said member 14 being pivoted at its other end at 16 to a relatively fixed part of the car-body, such as fixed wall'or end 8. This toggle, which is actuated to force the lower edge of the displaceable wall or side board outwardly, may be spread by any suitable means, that herein illustrated being a link 17 hinged at one end to link 10 and at the other end to pin 15 at the knuckle of the toggle. There is also hinged to lever 10 at a point intermediate its extremities one end of a lever or lifting bar 18 which is pivoted at its other end to one extremity of a lever 19 which latter is in turn pivoted to the car at any suitable point. It will bennderstood that the car body is, as usual, held in its righted position by chains 20.
The operation of the device is as follows:
As the car is tilted to discharge the load,-
lever 19 contacts with side beam 2, thus preventing link 10 and the side board connected thereto from participating further in the downward movement of the car body, and lever 18 moves until it assumes the osition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1; owever, toggle element 1 1 which is pivoted to the end wall of the car will continue to move downwardly therewith, but such movement of said toggle element is limited by the presence of link 17 which is connected to the knuckle of the toggle and to link 10 which latter is held stationary and in an elevated osition by lever 18. In view, therefore, of t is con. nection of link 17, which resists the descent of the toggle, the further downwardmovement of the car bod will result in the forcible spreading of sai to gle, and the connec' tion of the latter to the owerpart of the side board will force said lower portion outwardly until said side board, which swings around pivot 11, is practically parallel with the bottom of the car body. The displaceable wall or side board is accordingly so positioned as to afford an enlarged space for the discharge of the load, thus greatly facilitating the dumping of the car. After the load is discharged and the car body righted, the mechanism assumes the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and the car is ready to-be reloaded. It will be observed that any force applied to the bottom of the displaceable wal or side board tends to cause toggle element 14 to swing around its pivot on the car by reason of its connection with toggle element 13 connected to the side board, the resultant force being in the line of link 17. The force-so applied tends to lift link 10 and the side board attached thereto, but the Weight of the latter is sufficient to hold it in lace and therefore the toggle remains unbroken until the car is again dumped, and an efiective, automatic locking mechanism is provided.
It will be appreciated that the structure described above in detail is but one mechanical-expression of the invention, and that the structural details may be modified as may be desired; also that the invention may be used on structures analogous to dump cars.

'1. In a dumpcar or similar structure, the combination of a car-body having a displaceable wall, a toggle connecting-said wall and a relatively fixed part of the body, and a link connected to said toggle to forcibly spread thesa-me upon dumping of thecar.
2. -In aidu-mp-car or similar structure, the combination of a carbody having a displaceable wall, a toggle connecting said 1W3, and .a relatively fixed part of the body, and means engaging the knuckle of-said toggle to forcibly spread the latter upon dumping of the car.
3. In a dump-car or similar structure, the combination of a car-body having a displaceable wall, a link and a toggle-connecting said wall and .a relatively fixed part of the body, and a second link secured to said first-mentioned link and connected to said toggle to forcibly spread the same upon dumping of thecar.
4. Ina du 1 -car or similar structure, the combination 0 a car-body having-la dis-placeable wall, a link and a toggle connecting said wall and ,a relatively fixed part of the body, and a second link secured to said first-mentioned .link and to the knuckle of the toggle and adapted to forcibly :spread the toggle when the car is dumped.
5. In a dump-car or similar structure, :the combination of -.a car-body having .adisplaceable wall, a toggle .connecting saidwalland a relatively fixed part of the body, and a'lin'k connected to the toggle and adapted to forcibly spread the same upon dumping of the car and to lock said toggle when the car-body is righted.
6. In a dum -car or similar structure, the
combination 0' a car-body having a displaceable wall, a toggle connecting said wall and a relatively fixed part of the body, and means engaging the knuckle of the toggle and adapted to forcibly spread the same upon dumping of the car and to lock said toggle when the car-body is righted.
7. In a dum car or similar structure, the combination 0' a car-body having a displaceable wall, a link and a toggle connecting said wall and a relatively fixed part of the body, and a second link secured to said first-mentioned link and connected to the toggle to forcibly spread the same upon dumping of the car and to lock said toggle when the car body is righted.
8. In a dum car or similar structure, the combination of a car-body having a displaceable Wall, a link and a toggle connecting said Wall and a relatively fixed part of the body,
' and a second link secured to said first-mew tioned link and to the knuckle of the toggle to forcibly spread the same upon dumping of the car and to lock said toggle when the carbody is righted.
9. In a dum car or similar structure, the combination 0 a body having a displaceable wall, a link pivoted at one end to said well and at its other end to a relatively fixed part of the body, a lever or lifting-bar pivoted to said link and adapted to hold it and the displaceable wall in an elevated osition when the car dumps, a toggle pivote at one end to said displaceable wall and at its other end to a relatively fixed part of the body, and a second link connected to the first-named link and 'to the toggle and adapted to forcibly spread said toggle upon dumping of the car.
