PATENTED DEC. 17, 1907.
HARRY O. AXX, OF NAPOLEON, OHIO.
BRACE FOR SCREEN-DOORS OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 17, 1907.
Application filed September 21, 1907. Serial No. 394,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY O. Axx, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Napoleon, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Brace for Screen-Doors or the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in braces or supports adapted for use in connection with screen doors, gates and the like, and is designed to be applied to the rails of the door or gate, and to extend diagonally of the same to prevent the outer or free edge from sa ging.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings, formin a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a screen door provided with a brace constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the brace.
My improved brace includes two rods having their ends so designed as to be readily se cured to the rails of a door, and having means for connecting the two adjacent ends of the rods together and facilitate the lengthening or shortening of the brace.
In the specific form illustrated, the two rods 10 and 11. are of such a length as to extend from one side rail of the door intermediate its ends to the bottom rail adjacent the opposite side of the door, and one end of each rod is bent at substantially right angles to the general length of the rod and is sharpened as shown at 12, so that it may be readily driven into the wooden rail. The opposite end of one of the rods is provided with a small head 13, while the end of the other rod which lies adjacent said head is threaded for a short distance. For connecting the two rods together, I provide a nut 14 having two substantially parallel openings therethrough. One of these openings is threaded for .the reception of the threaded end of the rod 10, while the other receives the rod 11 and is of such a size that the head of said rod prevents the removal of the nut. The ends of the rods lie adjacent each other and substantially parallel, and both rods extend through the nut.
In applying the brace to a door, the rod 11 is rotated so that it extends through thenut 14 only a very short distance, and the nut is brought closely adjacent the head 13. The pointed end of one of the rods is driven into the vertical rail of the door adjacent the hinged side thereof, and the pointed end of the other rod is driven into the bottom rail adjacent the free side of thedoor. By rotating the ends of the rods about each other, the nut is caused to advance along the threaded end of the rod 10 to shorten the effective length ofthe brace and to raise the lower outer corner of the door.
In applying the brace to hard wood doors, it may be necessary to make a small hole with an awl or gimlet before driving in the pointed ends 12.
It is evident that the brace may be placed either upon the upper or the lower portion of the door, and either upon the inside or the outside thereof, as in any one of these positions it prevents the door from sagging.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A brace comprising two rods extending in the same general direction and having one end of one rod lying adjacent to and substan tially parallel with one end of the other rod, and a nut threaded on one of said rods and rotatably mounted on the other rod, the adj acent ends of said rods being rotated around each other to vary the effective length of the brace and the opposite ends of the rods being pointed and bent at an angle, whereby the brace may be secured in place.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARRY O. AXX.
Witnesses:
F. C. Frsx, DAVID HARMON.
