Be it known'that I, JonNv F. CoUnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pitcairn, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft-Gear for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to draw ear apparatus for railway cars and m oiject is to provide a simple and convenient construc..

such that the upper inclined face of the wedge bar bears upon the incline of the tapered opening in one of the friction blocks or plates, while the lower inclined face of the 1 wedge bar at the same end of said bar bears against the inclined wall of the tapered open- 7 ing in the companion friction block; so that upon a relative movement of the wedge bar and friction blocks inthe line ofdraft the said friction blocks o'r'plates will be moved in opposite directions by reason of the wedge shaped end of the wedge bar working inthe conical openings or recesses of the friction blocks or plates. This action takes place under both a pulling or buffing strain and is illustrated l11-'Fig.'3, wherein the friction blocks are shown as having been moved in wardly in relation to the yoke and in this movement friction has been created under heavy pressure between the inclined facesfof the companion friction blocks. As repre sented in Fig.3. The spring 12 has been compressed, owing to the draft gear having I been subjected to the buffing action; In this action the abutment plate forms the stop 'or78o backing piece-rind the spring is compressed and the parts of the draft gear operated by the movement of the front abutment or follower plate 6towards the rear abutment plate '6, the latter abutment plate remaining-es in position because itbears u onthe-abutf; ment 7.' - 4. In combination in a draft gear, a spring, a pair of friction blocks or plates arranged at the end of-the spring having tapered openings or recesses and a wedge member coacting therewith, substantially as described.

In combination in a draft gear, a spring, pairs of friction blocks or plates between whichthe said spring is interposed, a member within the springand having tapered ends for operating the members of the pairs of friction blocks and abutment means, said friction blocks operating transversely one on the other and in o positc directions, substantially as describecll 6. In combination in a draft gear, a spring, friction blocks movable transversely to the line of draft and having incline'd surfaces in contact and inclined wedge receiving surfaces, wedge means for operating the said friction blocks, a yoke s1. rounding the spring, friction blocks and wedge means and stops on the friction blo'cli's to limit their outward l movement and prevent shock, substantially as described.
