Be it-known that I, JOHN McCov, a citizen yof the United States, residingat Vienna `Cross Roads, in the county of Clark and justable bracket abovea work bench and are adapted to be moved to anydesired position above the bench to. set a screw in any part of' the work 'carriedfby the bench. The-object of the present invention is' to provide ari-instrument of this character which the screws. can be inserted in any suite able mannerand will be su portedand set without 'other manipulationfby the operator than the operation of the screwfdriver; and to provide an improved screw holder for supe portingthe screw while it is being driven; and further to rovide an improved frame for supporting t e screw-driver proper;- and to provide the` device with means for' drilling the work to form apertures in which to 'start the screws. 1

The lower arm of the U-shaped bracket 1 provided with a tube 18 which surrounds the lower end of the shaft 4 and the screwdriver carried thereby and is secured in any suitable manner to the lowr bearing 3. The tube 18 is provided with a feed conduit 19 extending at an angle thereto and preferably having` its mouth flared, as shown at 20. Secured to the lower endof the tube 18 is a screw holder 21, preferably having its upper end provided with an internal screw thread 22, by means of which it is secured to the tube 18. This screw holder preferably con` sists of a cylindrical casing 23, in the upper end of which the screw thread 22 is formed, the lower end being provided with jaws 24 having their inner faces beveled, as shown at 25, and rovided with an aperture 26 at the lower e ge thereof. These jaws are preferably two in number and are formed substantially semi-circular. Springs 27 are secured at their u per ends to the casing 22, as shown at 28, an at their lower ends to the jaws 24 and serve to hold the jaws normally in their closed position.
In order to adapt the screw holder 21 to hold screwsof various sizes, the-same is provided with an internal guide 29 which is preferably in the form of a cylindrical tube fittin within the casing 23 and provided with a s oulder at its upper end, as shown at 30, which is adapted to engage a corresponding shoulder 31 formed near the base of the portion 22 of the casing 23, thereby supporting the guide 29 in its roper position in the casing 23.' These gui es are readily removable and are made with the in tern'alibore of different sizes to correspond to the diameters of the heads of the several standard sizes of screws, and, by simply re moving one guide and inserting another, the
holder can be adapted to receive any of the standard sizes of screws and to hold the saine in a vertical p5s1tion`whi-le it is being set into the wood. The guides 29 are referably formed all of one size having their ower ends tapered, as shown at 33, and are then bored centrally to provide the same with an internal aperture of the proper diameter. This boring of the guide 29 cuts away a portion of the tapered lower end thereof corresponding to the diameter of the bore and causes the lower ed e of the same to be substantially flush witlgi the beveled inner face of the jaws 24 so that the face 25 of the jaw practically .forms a continuation of the guide 29 and the screw head is at all times in contact with the guiding surface.

The screw is fed into the con uit 19 either by hand or in any suitable manner and falls by gravity through the lower end of the tube 18 into the holder 21 which has been provided with a tubular guide 29 having a central bore corresponding to the diameter of the head of the screw. Thus as the screw drops into said guide and its Ypoint moves into engagement with the aperture 26 in the lower end of the jaws 24, the screw is held in a substantially vertical position.k The handle 13 is then depressed against the tension of the spring 141.",to move the screw-driver 12 into engagement with the slotted head of the screw.I The handle 10 is then operated to rotate the screw-driver and the screw is set into the wood, continual ressure being exerted upon the handle 13 to old the screwdriver continually in engagement with the slotted head of the screw. As the screw moves downward the jaws 24 separate against the tension of the springs 27 and allow the head of the screw to pass through the same. After the screw has been fully set the pressure is removed from the handle 13 and the spring 14 immediately moves the shaft 4 to its elevated position and retains the parts in their normal position. When it is desired to set screws in hard wood, it is desirable to bore the wood to provide the same with an aperture in which to start the screw. In order to accomplish this as readily as possible I have provided the end.

Havin thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isz- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination, .with a substantially U- shaped frame, an apertured member carried thereby between the arms of said U-shaped frame and extendin substantially parallel with said arms, a sha mounted in said arms and extending through said apertured meiniio ber and having both afrotatory and a reciprocatory movement relatively to said frame, a bevel inion mounted on said shaft to cause said sliaft to rotate therewith and to permit the same to reciprocate independently thereof, a bevel gear mounted on said apertured member beyond said shaft and adapted to mesh with said bevel pinion, means for rotating said bevel gear, and a screw-driver bitcarried by the lower end of said shaft, of a screw holder supported from said frame and adapted to rece1ve said bit.
2. In a device ofthe character described,

In a device of the character described, the combination, witha frame and a screwdriver, of a screw holder comprising a casing, spring-pressed jaws mounted beneath said casing and having their inner faces beveled, a removable guide mounted Within said casing and having its lower end tapered to correspond with the beveled innerv faces of said jaws, substantially as described.
