'JosErH L. noNaT, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
mar-V LVE.-
I S pecification of Letters Patent.
- I Application filed December 1906. Serial rasta ssz.
"To all whom it may concern. 1 Be it knownv hat I,'JosEPn L. Down, a
citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chi- 1' device comprisinga trap containinga valve,1
cage, in the county of Cook and-State of Illino s, have invented certain new and useful gnlilprovements 1n Trap-Valves, of which the is aspecificatiOn. H
"My lnventlon relates to improvements tra valves.
v he object of my invention is to provide a to be used in connection with certain fixtures convem'ently drawn off to revent damage that would otherwise res t from freezing and, whereby the o enin'g communicating with the sewer may e effectually closed to 'lieu" of a laundry tub. or dish washing 'wateris carried to the sewer may: 25
l prevent the entrance of-"sewergas into the premises. 1 Another object of'my invention is to rot vide .a valve, of .thecharacterdescri ed, whereby the. drain conduitw throughwhich '0 closed, as a result of whichwater may be retained in the-sink, and. such raeeptajclemay be used 4 .basin, after which the' valve may be turned to its normal position ,andthecontained water drained through thetrapto the sewer.
These and other objectsgofmy invention will become a parent to persons skilled in a "the art from t "descri tion.
e. drawings and the following In t edrawings: Figure- 1 is a central vertical section of my improved device applied to anlordinary kitchen sink, showing the valve turned to position for permitting'free flow of water through the tra Fig; 2 is a similar-"view showing the, va ve turned to position completely Cclosing the opening through the trap, thereby-permitting Water tobe retained 1n the sink and 'closingtheopening to the sewer against the-inflow of sewer as. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device. ig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side -elevat1on of the device.
' tains a. rotatable valve 14. he valve' 14 is pushed b hollow and is preferably tapered to preserve side ,w
iatented Dec. 10, 1907.
I twater-gght contact withiwthe s of the. casing;- Ports 14' snafu" are made thro'ugh the' walls of the valve to;
permit unobstructed fio w' of wast throu h' the'trap 15 when the valve is ,turnedintot fe. position shown in Fig. 1. .Wh
n the awe 5 is turned into the position-shown 2 the ports 14' and 14 are'moved out of reg lster with the conduit comprising part of the trap, and'the solid side walls of the valve :close the said conduit on both sides of said valve. l a such as basins,.kitchen sinks, and thelike, wherebythe water-.from-the trap may be.
.Normally the trap 15 contains water, up totheline 15, to seal the-conduit commun1-- eating with the sewer, against the introduction of sewer gas into the apartment in which the fixture is contained.
It is frequently desirable to empty the Water from the, trap 15 toprevent freezing, in which event the valve 14 is left in position shown in Fig. 1, and the drip, or drain cook 16 is opened when the water inthe trap 15 constituting the seal, will run' out, after which .the valve 14 may be turned intojposij tion shown in Fig. 2 to close the outlet to the sewer to revent the entrance of sewer gas.
In the illustrated embodiment a sink, suchas 17, is connected to one end of the trap, as by pipe 18, the other end of-the trap being connected to the drain by pipe 19. I
The valve 14 is provided upon its upper surface with a flat perforated boss through which a double-headed rod, or handle 20 freelyv passes. After the valve has been turned, by this means, the rod may be ack into its rearward position out of the Way.
The washer 21 is perforated and threaded,
and attaches to a threaded. boss 22 made upon the lower end of the valve 14. The boss is perforated and threaded, into. which the-drain valve 16 is inserted.
The trap is shown attached to pipes 18 and 19 by means of screw-threaded nuts'23 and 24. Any other means for this purpose, however, such as wiped joints, may be em 'r y Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, of the United States, is:
1. The combination, in a drain trap, of a U-shaped casin having a drain opening at the bottom of the U, a valve in said bottom having a-through passage and an opening constantly efiectmg communication between the drain opening and said through passage,
- and an independent valve controlling the drain opening.
- 2,. As an article of manufacture, a drain trap structure comprising a casing providing dovvnvvardly extending legs connected at their lower ends, a valve in said connection controlling communication of the legs, said valve and the casing providing drain open- 10. rings arranged in constant registration; and
- an independent valve controlling said drain I openings.
3. The combination in a drain trap of a U-shaped casing having a drain opening in 15 its bottom, a valve rotatable on a vertical axis having' a transverse through passage and a verticalpassage from said transverse eve-ma passage through its bottom registering conbetween the legs of the casing, with its top presented in like direction with the said legs,
a boss upon the top of the valve, and a handle 20 passing freely through said boss.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
