JAMES T.. BAILEY, OF PHCENIXVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.I
CHRISTMAS-TREE HOLDER.
. No. 873,402. Y
To all 'whom it'aay concern:
Beit knownthat I, JAMES T. BAILEY, -a
' citizen `of the United States, residing at Phoenixville, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Implrovements in Christmas-Tree Holders, of W 'ch-'the following is aspeci- ,being toA provide a simp `The, present invention relates to an improved meansfor supporting Christmas trees or the like in an upright position, the object e and inexpensive device `which can be readily applied to the baseof the tree in such a manner as to hold the same in thedesired position, and which comprises few and simple parts which can be readily collapsed so as to occupy a minimum amount of space when not in use.
- For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to 'acquire a knowledge of the details of'construction of the means for .effecting the result, reference accompanying drawings`,in which:

application of t e device' and, Fig. 2 is a topl p an VCorresponding and like parts are referred to in the followi 0' description and indicated in 'all the views o the drawings by the saine i reference characters.
In general, the support coni rising the present invention embodies a spi er carrying a plate upon which the base of the tree rests,
and a plurality of'legs'loosely connected to Athe arms ofthe spider, the upper extremities of the legsv being provided with means for positivelyT engaging the tree while the lower extremities are iiared .outwardly and rest upon the fioor or other sup ort. In. the speciiic construction 'of the spider it will be observed that the same is forme of a series of cross bars intersecting at their. middle portions to form the radial arms 1, each of the arms 1 being provided at its extremity with a laterally extending pin 2 and the said-pins being formed' with elongated heads 3.
Restin upon the 'radial arms'l at the point' 'of their intersection is a plate 4' rovided with a central opening 5 through w ich any suitable 'fastening member maybe driven into engagpinent with the lower end ofthe tree tru v The' supporting legs 6 are formed at intermediate points with elongated openings or slots 7 receivingv the: pins 2 ex-4 tending laterally rom the extremities of the VSpecification of Letters Patent. Application filed Fcliruaryv25.1907. Serial No. 359,144.
is to 'be had to the following description and eral pins projecting Patented nec.. 1o, i907.
radialarms 1. These slots 7 correspond to the elongated heads 3, of the pins 2 so that when the two a're in alinement with each other, the legs 6 can be readily attached to and detached from the spider. Inwardly extending prongs or points S-.areformedat the upper extremities of the legs 6, the said prongs being designed to embed themselves in the trunk of the tree in such a manner as t to hold the same rigidly in an upright posi-I" tion. In the'preferred form of the inve tion, the legs 6 are curved longitudinally so that the lower portions thereof iiare outwardly and the lower extremities of the legs are formed with the shoes or basalfilanges 9 which may be employed to secure the device to a suitable support, and which also serve to prevent injury to a carpet or other floor covering. v
Having thus described the IIVB'I'IOD; What A is claimed as new is:
i.l In a device of the character dscribem, the combination of 8 bOdy PQIIOII upon which the tree trunk IGSQS, the sind bOdy portion comprising a pluillty 0f Mms, and legs the intermediate portions of`whichhave a detachable and interlocking connection vwith said arms while their iipper .portions are provided with means for ,en aging the tree trunk, one of the members eing connected having a in projecting therefrom provided with an e ongated head while the o p'osite member is formed with an elongate opening corresponding to the head and receiving the pin.
2. In a device of the character described, A
the combination of aspider formed with a plurality of arms, pins rojecting laterally from the arms of the s i erand formed with elongated heads, and egs provided at intermediate oints -with elongated openin s receiving t e pins and corresponding wit the elongated heads upon the saine whereby a detachable and interlocking'connection is produced between the le s and arms, the upper portions of the legs eing provided with means for engagi a tree tru 3. In a device o the character described,
the combination of a spider comprisingfa series of cross bars intersecting at 'their middle ortions whereby a plurality of radial ari'ns y is formed, a plate carried by the spider, lat-f from the arms of the spider and formed withl elongated heads, and a l series oi legs provided at intermediate points withelongated openings receiving the- Eins and correspondin to thev elon ated In testimony whereof I-aix my signature eads upon the same w ereby a. detac able in presence of two witnesses. and interlocking connection is produced between the legs andfarms, the u er extremil JMS T' BAILEY' [L' S'] 5 ties of the legs carrying nwar y extending Witnesses:
