Description

PATENTED DEC. 10, 1907.

, M. E. MoD ONNELL. 'ORNAMENTAL ARTIGLE FOR PERSONAL WEAR.

, APPLICATION I'ILBD D110. 14. 1906.

Ira/shim".-

.plain surface or body,

MICHAEL EUGENE MCDONNELL, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS.

ORNAMENTAL ARTICLE FOR PERSONAL WEAR.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Dec. 10, 1907.

Application filed December 14. 1906- Serial No. 347.885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL EUGENE MODONNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leominster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Articles for Personal Wear, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to ornamental articles for personal wear.

Broadly stated, my invention comprises a preferably of transparent material and attached thereto is a cameo ornament which has previously been pressed into the desired shape and ground to fit the plane or curved surface towhich it is to be attached and finally cemented securely in place.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure L is a front elevation of a comb for personal wear, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1 with the teeth of the comb broken away.

Referring to the drawing 1 represents a body of transparent or translucent material which comprises a headpiece 3 and teeth 4. Intermediate the body 3 and the teeth 4 is a raised ornament which is cemented or otherwise secured to the body. These elements 3 and 4 together with the ornamental balls 6 secured to the head 3 are. all of the usual construction now used in combs of this type.

The ornament 5 comprises an elongated semi-cylindrical member which has sufficient curvature to properly and evenly engage the body 3. Secured to the head 3 above the ornament 5 or to any other portion of the body, as may be deemed advisable, by cementing or otherwise are the ornaments 7, 8, and 9 shown in this instance in the form of a hollow semi-ovoid or egg shaped body, also of transparent or translucent material. It will be well understood that I may change the design of these ornaments to any configuration which will be pleasing to the eye, and I preferably do make the outside ornaments 7 and 9 of a somewhat smaller size than the intermediate one 8.

Having thusdescribed the article, I will now describe the method of producing the same.

The procedure followed in forming the body, cutting the teeth thereon and placing the ornamental balls 6 upon the head is well known in the art and need not herein be described but the forming and attaching of the ornaments 5, 7, 8 and 9 constitutes an important part of my invention and I will now describe the method of operation. A transparent sheet of shell celluloid, cellulose or pyroxylin or other similar material is taken and blanks of the required size and shape are cut out and heated to a proper temperature to allow of their easy formation. They are then placed into dies and formed up in the shape shown desired and then ground upon their edges so as to make an even mating surface with the body to which they are to be attached. This grinding of course .takes place after the temperature of the article has been reduced to such an extent that it will not become deformed by further manipulation. The ornament in its then perfectedstate is cemented to the body by a transparent cement.

and the article is thus completed. It will be seen that by making the attached ornament hollow the transparency of the article is not materially affected although somewhat darkened by reason of the double thickness but this is almost negligible, owing to the fact that a large amount of light penetrates the ornament at the sides and thereby does not appreciably affect th general transparent appearance of the article.

Although I have shown and described a comb for personal wear, I do not wish to be limited in any way by this disclosure asother articles may be thus ornamented.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An article for personal wear comprising a non-opaque body having a plain, smooth face, teeth integral with said body, and a hollow non-opaque ornament cemented to the face of said body.

2. An article for personal wear comprising a pressed non-o 'aque body having a smooth, plain face, teet integral with said body ornaments carried by the head of said body, and hollow non-opaque ornaments cemented to the face of said body.

3. An ornamental comb for personal wear comprising a non-opaque body having a or in any other shapesmooth, plain face, and a hollow non-opaque similar to that of the body with its edges iinfirnament having its edges cemented to the ished to fit the same and cemented thereto. 10

ody;

In testimony whereof I afl'ix my signature 4. An article for personal wear com rising in presence of two witnesses.

a plain smooth faced body of cellu oid or M. EUGENE MODONNELL. similar material, means carried by said body Witnesses:

adapted to secure the same upon the person, LEVI DowER, and a hollow pressed ornament of material W. H. GOODRIOH.
