SEASONING-MACHINE.
Specification of LettersiPatent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed August 6. 1904. Serial No. 219.721.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED F. HowE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Salem,
in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Seasoning-Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts..
a machine with which the liquid material may be more thoroughly worked into the hide, skin or leather 1n a uniform manner, whereby the machine is particularly applicable for use as a seasoning machine. For this purpose, the machine is provided with a brush or roll, which has imparted to it a rotary movement and simultaneously a bodily movement in the direction of the length of the axis upon which said brush rotates, whereby the liquid material is not only applied to the surface of the hide, skin or leather, but is simultaneously worked into said surface so as to obtain a more effective and uniform result land substantially the same as is now obtained by hand.
Figure 1 is a transverse section of one form of machine embodying this invention. Fig. 2, an elevation of a portion of the machine shown in Fig. 1 looking toward the right, and Fig. 3, a sectional detail to be referred to, the section being taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, a represents a bed roll or cylinder upon which the hide, skin or leather is supported, while the seasoning or other liquid material l) is applied to it, by a brush c, to which the liquid dressing or seasoning material b is supplied .by a fluted roll d which cooperates .with a trough or pan e containing said liquid material. The bed roll a, the brush or roll c and fluted roll d may be revolved in any suitable manner. The bed roll may and preferably will have coperating with it a second rotary brush f.
In accordance with this invention, the rotary brush or roll c has imparted to it a recilprocating movement in the direction of t e length of the same, and in the present instance I have shown one construction of mechanism for effecting said longitudinal movement. To this end, the shaft h of the brush c has fast on` it a sleeve, collar or hub i provided with a cam path or groove j, into which extends a stationary pin or stud k iixed to a bracket m, which may and preferably will be adjustably secured to a sidev of the frame 'n of the machine, and for this purpose, the bracket m as shown in Fig. 3 is provided with a slot p through which extends a clamping bolt or screw q, which engages a suitably threaded socket in the side frame of the machine. The cam groove or path j is suitably shaped to effect a longitudinal reciprocation of the brush orv roll c while it is being rotated, which latter movement may be accomplished as shown in Fig. 2 by a pinion 10 meshing with a gear 12 fast on the shaft of the drum or bed roll a. The brush f may also be driven from the gear 12 by a pinion 13.
From the above description, it will be seen, that the seasoning or other liquid material conveyed to the brush or roll c, by the fluted roll d, is applied to the hide, skin or leather on the drum or bed roll a, by the rotary movement of the said brush, and is forced or worked into said hide, skin or leather by the reciprocating movement of said brush, with the result, that the hide, skin or leather has the seasoning material applied to it in a highly satisfactory manner substantially the same as 1s now accomplished by hand. The
machine may be provided with the usual spatter boards 14, 15 and rolls 16, 17 coperating with the rotary brushes, and also with the scraper 18 coperating with the drum or bed roll, and while these parts are herein shown, I do not claim-the same as of my present invention.
The pan or trough e herein shown may be adjustable with relation to the fiuted roll d by means of a link 2O having the thumb-nut 21. This feature also forms no part of my present invention. In the present instance, provision is made for imparting longitudinal movement to the brush c only, but it is evident if so desired that the brush f may be moved longitudinally in a similar manner.
Claims.
1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a bed roll or drum to support the hide skin or leather, a rotary brush coperating with said bed roll or drum, means to rotate said brush, a trough or pan to contain liquid material to be applied to the hide skin or leather on said drum or bed roll7 a iiuted roll coperating with said trough or pan and with said brush, a cam attached to said brush, and a device cooperating with said cam to effect longitudinal movement of said brush While it is in rotation, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
2. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a bed roll or drum to support the hide skin or leather, a rotary brush coperating with said bed roll or drum, means to rotate said brush, a trough or pan to contain liquid material to be applied to the hide skin or leather on said drum or bed roll, a iluted roll cooperating with said trough or pan and with said brush, a collar or hub fast to said brush to rotate therewith and provided ith a cam groove, a stud or pin extended into said groove, and an adjustable support for said stud or pin, substantially as described. In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this speciiication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
