PAPER-BAG- PUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed November 19, 1906. Serial No. 344,112.
To all whom-"it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT MUNDAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fulton, in the county of Hempstead and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in a Paper-Bag Punch, of which t 1e following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in devices for punching paper bags so that they can be conveniently placed upon a suitable hanger.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, pointed outin the claims and shown in the ac companying drawings, in which, Eigure 1 is a perspective view of the punch. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the base plate, a portion of an operating handle being shown in section, and a punching tool also being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of a portion of the handle, the same being partly in section illustrating the manner of securing the punching tool to the handle. Fig. 4 is a detail view partly in side elevation and artly in section illustrating a slight rnodiiication in which the tool holding shank is pivoted to the operating handle.
In these drawings A represents a base plate which has a central raised portion A, cut out as shown at A On an end portion of this base is formed an upright or standard B in the bifurcated upper end of which is pivoted an operating handle B. The handle B is curved adjacent its pivoted end as shown at B extending from the ivotal point in a direction opposite the raiseil portion A of the I late and is then curved back upon itself and rought substantially above and parallel to the portion A of the base terminating at its free end in a handle B The handle B carries a depending shank C in vertical alinement with the opening A and at the lower end of this shank is formed a suitable socket which receives a punching tool C which is locked in it's adjusted position by means of a set screw C This punching tool is preferably V-shaped in cross section as shown in Fig. 2. Upon the raised portion A is secured a spring D which is out out as shown at D upon one side, said out out portion registering with the opening A in the ase plate. The central portion of this spring bears upon the bags which are being operated upon and serves to hold them in position and also prevents their being drawn upwardly when the operating handle is lifted after being pressed downwardly for the purpose of forcing the punching tool through the bag.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a slight modification which consists in substituting for the in tegral shank C, a shank E which is pivoted to the handle B and which carries a punching tool E. In use the bags to be punched are placed upon the raised portion A beneath the spring D and the handle B forced downwardly, forcing the punching tool 0 through the bags.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by by Letters Patent, is
A paper bag punch comprising a base having a raised apertured central portion, an upright standard carried by the base upon one side of the raised portion, a handle pivotally connected to said standard, a shank depending from said handle, a punching tool detachably carried by sald shank, and a notched spring secured at one end to the raised portion, the notch alining with the aperture as and for the purpose set forth.
