om Boisins Nn UNDEBFRAME.
Be it known that I, ALLEN E. OSTMND, a .citizen of thevUnited States, residing at Paterson', New Jersey, have invented a certain new and Auseful Ir'nl'irovementv in Car' Bolsters and Un'de'rframes, of which the followin is a full, clear, and exact descri tion, suc 1 as will enable others skilled in-t e art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specication, in which-'- Figure 1 is-a side elevational view of abolster constructedin accordance with -my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottomA` plan view of the bolster and a portion of the undeifiame Fig. 3 is a sectional view take'n on the line 3.-3 ofFig. 1 Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig.
2 with the bottom cover plate of the bolsterI removed; and Figs. `5 and 6 are sectional views taken on thelines 5'- 5 and 6-6, respectively, of Fig. 3.
This invention relates to car underframes and vparticularly to the construction of-'the ame.
The main object of my invention is to probolster of an underfr vide a built-up bolsterl which is strong andf light, and which is so designed that the arts thereof i can be assembled and rivete tcgether before the bolster is'placed in operative o sition.
Re erring to the ldrawings which represent the preferred form of my invention, 1 desig.
nates flanged diaphragme preferably formed of pressed metal, and arranged between' the center sills and the side sills of the car.- The bolster .comprises four of these diaphragme 1 avanged 1n pairs, as shown in Fig. 2, and.
with their iianges projecting o posit'e directions. The diaphragme of 4eac vpair 'are spaced apart to provide openings be` tween their vertical webs' to 'receive the member 'which ties the pairs ofdia}1 hrag-:r:ns

of a plate'g that extends from side sill to side sill and is secured to the upper iianges of the diaphragme 1 by rivets 10.- This tension plate 9 is not secured to the diaphragme, however, until after the bolster has been' placed in position and the center sills have been let down into the bolster and secured thereto.
llVithv a construction of this description I am able to usea machine riveter for driving the rivets 5 and 7, which'connect the compression member 2 and diaphragmeA 1v together, vand.- after these parts have been assembled I 'arrange-them 1n position and then place the center sills in pairs of diaphragms. f
