CHARLES H. EIMERBRINK, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
REGISTERING MECHANISM.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed August 25. 1906. Serial No. 332.066.
To all whoml it may concern.'
Be it known that CHARLES H. EIMER- BRINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registering Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
In sorting tobacco, from bulk, it is customary to lay the different sizes in separate pies, and finally to count the pieces in each It is the object of my invention to provide a registering device adapted particularly for use in sorting tobacco, whereby, in
^ separating tobacco from bulk, the number of pieces in each pile may be registered, so that counting of the pieces after the tobacco has been separated is obviated.
lith this object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of a device characterized by my invention, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, summed up in the claims, and illustrated in the drawings, in which latter:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a register embodying my improvements, part of the casing being broken away to show the parts behind; Fig. 2 is a side sectional elevation; Figs. 3 and 3a are details of the escapement; and Fig. 4 is a detached view of one of the push-button keys and parts between the same and the rock-shaft bearing the escapement dogs.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a suitable casing, containing the working parts of my device, and which comprises two sections, one, lettered 2, containing the escapement mechanism and the chain of gearing, and the other, lettered 3, containlng the bank of key-stems and connected parts.
Extending through the horizontal top plate 3a of section 3 are the key-stems 4, adapted to be depressed by the finger of the operator, through the medium of the buttons 5. Guiding sleeves 6 are provided for the upper ends of the key-stems, and are secured, as shown, in the top plate 3a.
Secured to the inner side wall of section 3 is a bracket 7, one for each key-stem, which has an angled apertured portion 9, forming a bearing for a rocker-shaft 9a, an angled apertured lug 8 in which the lower ortion of stein 4 is received, and a pin 1() or a purpose presently appearing).
Secured rigidly to the front or outer end of the rocker-shaft 9a is a rocker-arm 11. It will be seen that the lower end of the keystem 4 rests upon the upper surface of rockerarm 11, whereby downward depression of said key-stem depresses the rocker-arm 11, thereby rocking or rotating the shaft 9a. A retractile spring 14, one end thereof secured to the pin 10 and the other end thereof secured to a linger 15 of the rocker-arm 11, returns the rocker-arm to normal horizontal position, coincidently, also, returning the key-stem 4 to normal position after actuation thereof.
Rigidly carried by the inner end of rockershaft 9a 1s a'crank-arm 16, to whichis pivotally connected at 17 one end of a bent link or rod 18, the other end whereof is pivoted, at 19, to a rotatable disk 20, rigidly secured to which is a vertical rod or rock-shaft 21, supported towards the upper end by a bracket 22. A retractile spring 23, one end thereof secured to a pin 24 and the other end to disk 20, returns the rock-shaft to normal position, after actuation. It will be seen that the springs 14 and 23 cooperate to return all the key-connected parts to normal position.
The upper end of the shaft 21 carries a pair of escapement' dogs, a rigid dog 27 and a loose dog 31, the latter being weighted at 3() to tilt it forward along the escape wheel 29 a distance corresponding to one graduation on the dial 34, when said loose dog is not engaged by the escape wheel. As this general type of escapement is well understood, detailed description will be unnecessary. Obviously, either the loose or the rigid dog may be normally in engagement with the wheel. The latter permits the step by step movement of the chain of gears, connected with the shaft of the escape wheel, and the consequent movement of the pointer 33 cooperating l eXert a pull on the link 18, thereby rotating the disk 2() and the shaft 21, effecting actuation of the escapement- dogs 27 and 31, and permitting movement of the escape wheel 29.
The button on the top end of each keystem may be labeled with the name of a particular grade of tobacco leaf, each button bearing the name or number of a dierent grade, and, as the tobacco leaves are sorted from the bulk and laid in different piles, the pro er key-stern is depressed for each leaf, an thus the number of leaves in each pile is registered.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. In a registering-mechanism, and in combination with an escapement-wheel, a vertical key-stem, a horizontal rocker-shaft, a rocker-arm secured to the forward end thereof, and upon which the lower end of the keystem bears; and intermediate mechanism operatively connected to the rocker-shaft for permitting movement of the escapementwheel upon actuation of the rocker-shaft.
2. In a registering-mechanism, and in combination with an escapement-wheel7 a vertical key-stem, a horizontal rocker-shaft7 a rocker-armvsecured to the forward end thereof, and upon which the lower end of the keystem bears, a rotatable shaft carrying escapement-dogs engaging with the escapementwheel, and intermediate mechanism o erativelyconnected to the rocker-shaft an to saidrotatable shaft for actuating the latter and the escapement-dogs carried thereby.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
'CHARLES H. EIMERBRINK.
