ADDING-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,363, dated March 3, 1891.
Application filed'March 17, 1890.
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID J. ROWLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adding-Machines; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved adding orcalculating machine; and it consists in certain details of construction and combina tion of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved machine, which is constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, having apart of the disk and levers taken away the better to show the working parts. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a reduced front view of the entire machine, showing a disk for adding hundreds.
To construct a machine in accordance with my invention, I provide a base-plate a, having a strong standard 1) formed integral therewith for the purpose of carrying a short shaft 0. This shaft is rigidly secured to the said standard I) and is provided at its forward end with a disk (Z, actuated by a flat coil-spring c, the form. of which is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, while in Figs. 1 and 3 the spring is shown in side view by full lines, one end of which spring is secured to the shaft 0 and the other to the said disk (Z. Pivoted beneath this disk (Z is an outwardly-projecting leaf or table f, having an upwardly-extending arm g, which is loosely connected to the shaft 0 in a manner that the said arm g may have a short movement toward or away from the disk (Z. At the rear of the arm 9 is a graduated checklever h, which is loosely fitted to the shaft 0 and provided with or attached to a helical spring "Z in a manner that the said lever h will move toward the disk (Z when the front arm 9 is removed, and also bring the lever h back against a check-pin j, or to its normal position, when the same has been revolved by Serial No. $14,194. (N0 model.)

Pivoted to the shaft 0, which carries the table or leaf f, are a series of operating-levers it, provided with keys p, each of which has an upward extension q of the same vertical height or length, and the upper extremity of each vertical exten sion q remains out of or to the rear of the vertical plane of the lever 7L unless one of the keys 1) is depressed.
At Fig. 4 I have shown, in addition to the above-described machine, an extra dial to, loosely mounted on a stationary stud and having a ratchet formed about its periphery, which is adapted to engage with a projection 00, formed on the disk (Z, at each revolution.
In operation the disk (Z is divided or separated into spaces about its front periphery and a pointer o secured to the forward end of the shaft 0. To add a column of figures it is only necessary to press the keys 2) representing or corresponding with the said figures and the sum will be indicated 011 the disk (Z by the pointer o. If the fifth key is depressed, the same will move the table or leaf f downward, and in so doing release the pin 5 from the perforations Z at the bottom of the disk (Z and engage the pin 7;, secured at the outer extremity of the lever 72. (See Fig. 1.) The key marked 5,being depressed, moves its upper extension (1 beneath or into the same vertical plane as the fifth notch on the lever h. The disk (Z, being released from the pin 5, revolves about the shaft 1: by the action of the spring 6 until stopped by the upward extension (1 of the fifth key, as the pin 7.; on the lever 7L secures the same to the disk (Z and is kept attached thereto until released by removing the pressure from the key 17, at which time the helical spring '2' recovers or brings the said lever it back to its original position, and the pin 8, again entering one of the perforations Z, prevents the disk from further rotation. Thus any number of figures may be added by simply depressing the keys corresponding to the same. At each revolution of the disk (Z the projectime LiOIl so engages with oneof the teeth of the ratchet formed on the dial w and revolves the said dial w a short distance, and thereby indicates such movement by the stationary pointer y. Each space on the small dial 20 represents the sum of one hundred, While the spaces on the large disk at represents one. This construction enables the operator to read hundreds on the small dial to and any fraction. thereof on the large disk 01.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1 1. The herein-described z'tdding-machine, consisting of the disk d, loosely mounted on a shaft 0, rigidly secured in suitable bearings, the lever h, attached to the said shaft 0 and having the notched edge, the leaf or table f and operating-levers n q, pivoted beneath the disk, the arm g, attached to the said leaf or table f and provided with a pin .9 to engage with perforations Z, formed about the periph: cry of the disk d, and a spring t' for operating the lever h, substantially as and for the purpose described.
