Description

PATENTED DEG. 3, 1907. AL LEEN J. DOWNEY.
SASH LOCK. APPLIUATION FILED JUNE 18. 1907.

SASH-LOCK.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed June 18. 1907. Serial No. 379.615.
, which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash locks, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide means for locking the lower sash either in a closed position or sufficiently elevated to provide a ventilating passage below the same and to also provide means whereby the upper sash may be lowered and locked at any time independently of or simultaneously with the lower sash.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simplespring actuated sash lock for holding the upper or lower sash in closed po-4 sition or in position open sufficiently to allow ventilation in the room.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the portion of a window frame and sash showing my sash lock in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a detail partial sectional view through the sash lock. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the keeper member of the sash lock. Fig. 4 is a plan view and partial section of the spring actuated member of the look engaging the keeper, on the line 4-4, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the window casing, 2 is the lower sash and 3 is the up er sash. Secured to the upper sash 3 is a {eeper 4, said keeper comprising a hollow, metallic frame having end lu s 5 which are perforated at 6 for securing t e same by means of screws 7 to the upper sash 3, said keeper being provided with a series of slots 8 to receive the end of the spring actuated sash lock.
The sash lock consists of a casing 9 in which is pivotally'niounted a spring actuated arm 10, said arm being provided with a shank 11 pivoted in the upper wall of the casing 9, and upon the lower end of the shank 11 is a T-liead 12 having rounded ends 13.
The arm 10 is provided with a beveled end 14 which fits snugly against the base portion of the keeper 4 when said end is seated in one of the notches 8 in said keeper. A spring 15 bears against the T-head 12 to normally hold the arm 10 in locked position in one of the slots 8 of the keeper 4, said spring having a hub providedwith a squared portion 16 which fits a recess in the inner wall of the casing 9, and a screw 17 is passed through the hub and into the top of the sash 2. Another screw 18 is utilized for holding the casing in place.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: `Whenever it is desired to raise the lower sash 2 sufficiently to permit ventilation of the room, the arm 10 is pushed backward until it is out of the way of the keeper 4 and the window is raised, when by releasing the arm 10 it engages one of the slots S to hold the window elevated and locked. Should it be desired to lower the upper sash 3, this may be done in an obvious manner or both the upper and lower sashes may be adjusted to the required positionto permit ventilation above and below, as will be obvious.
My invention is of simple construction and can be applied to any window sash; can be manufactured at slight cost, and serves yboth to hold the window ocked in closed position or at the required adjustment of either sash. Having thus described the invention, what I claim is :4
A sash lock comprising a slotted keeper member, and a locking member,`s`aid locking member consisting of a casing, an arm pivoted to said casing and provided with a;
T-head within the casing, a spring bearing against vthe T-head, said spring provided with a hub having a squared portion which fits a recess in the under wall ofthe casing, and an attaching screw passing through the squared portion and hub -of said spring to secure the same to the sash.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
