To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALon) OSCAR WIE- GANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wathena, in the county of Doniphan and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Mechanical Movement, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide novel features of construction for a mechanical movement, which are exceedingly simple and compact, that are adapted for converting rotary motion given to a horizontal shaft into vertical reciprocating and partial rotary motion for an upright driven shaft.
The improvement is applicable for the operation of different machines with equal facility; as, for example, a dough kneader, a butter Worker, an egg beater, -a meat chopper, a churn or a washing machine, and for the purpose of illustrating the improvement as applied, it is shown in connection with a washing machine of the pneumatic dasher type.
The invention consists in the novel conarts, as is hereinafter described and define in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding arts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectiona side view of a washing machine of the type hereinbefore mentioned, and a side elevation of the improved mechanical movement combined therewith for its operation. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse partly sectional view of details of the improvement, substantially on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken substantially on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
The washing machine shown comprises a suds box A, which may be formed either rectangular or circular in its sidewall, having legs A and a removable lid A As represented, the novel mechanical movement embodies a frame, preferably having two arms 5, 5 joined together and u on a base flange 5 The arm 5 curves orwardly and joins an upright frame member 5 which, near its ends, curves forwardly producing a foot portion 5 and a top portion 5.
The base flan e 5 and foot portion 5 are seated upon an secured to the lid A of the ber 5 wherein the upper end of a suds box and support the other portions of the frame in a vertical plane. On the upper end of the arm 5, a box a is formed, and in the same horizontal plane therewith a similar box I) is formed on the upright frame member 5. A shaft 6 is loosely mounted in the boxes at, b and on the end of said shaft which projects outward through the box a, a balance wheel 7 is mounted, having a crank handle 7 thereon. On the opposite end of the shaft 6, a bevel pinion 8 is mounted and secured at a point near the upright frame member 5.
Upon the foot 5 and top portion 5 of the frame, an oblong ring member 5 is secured by its ends respectively, said ring member that is disposed transversely of the frame a short distance forward of the frame member 5, loosely receiving the bevel pinion 8, be-

A tubular plunger barrel 10 is loosely mounted upon the guide shaft 9 and passes loosely down through a perforation in the foot piece 5 Upon the barrel 10, near its upper end, a hub d of cylindrical form is preferably secured, but may be made integral with the barrel. From the elongated body of the hub (1, three short arms at project in the same vertical plane, and upon said arms similar roller-like teeth 01 are rotatably mounted. The barrel shaped roller teeth (1 have such arelative position that they will mesh with the teeth of the pinion 8 at one side thereof, as shown in the drawings, so that the rotation of the driving shaft 6 will impart motion to the barrel 10 as will presently be more fully explained. Upon the lower end of the plunger barrel 10, a pneumatic dasher 11 is secured, having a dished form, the concave side of said dasher being lowermost and, as is usual in this class of washing machines, forces suds water down through fibrous material placed in the suds tub or box A for renovation.
In operation, assuming that soiled fibrous material along with suds water have been placed in the suds box A, and the lid closed so as to dispose the dasher 11 in position to operate upon the goods that may be garments or other household linen, the rotation of the driving shaft 6 in direction of the curved arrow as in Fig. 2 will first raise the hollow shaft or barrel 10 until the lowermost tooth d rides upon the pinion 8. A continuation of rotary motion given to the shaft 6 in the same direction, will rock the plunger barrel or hollow shaft 10 laterally,giving it one-fourth of a revolution, which will dispose' the roller teeth d on the opposite side ,of the pinion 8, which latter will obviously cause a downward movement of the plunger barrel, and this operation may with ease be 1 machine.
While I have described the improvement as applied to a washing machine, I do not wish to restrict its use to such a machine, as
it is evident by immaterial changes, the
improved mechanical movement may be ut1l1zed to actuate any machine wherein it 18 .of advantage to give a plunger or the like a vertical reciprocatory and partial rotary movement at each stroke of the machine.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A mechanical movement, comprising a supporting frame, a rotatable driving frame, a hollow shaft. or barrel slidable and rotatable on the guide shaft, and teeth projected from the barrel and engaging the pinion.
2. A a supportin shaft. on the frame, a hollow shaft or barrelslidable and rotatable-on the guide shaft, and a vertical row of teeth projected from the barrel and engaging the pinion.
3. A.mechanical movement, comprising a supporting frame, said frame having an shaft on the frame, a pinion on an end offsaid shaft, a guide shaft pendent on the.
