Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1997.
Applicata. sied member 27.1905. serai No. 349.605.
To alt whom it may concern:
vBe it known that I, ANeUs McKenzie, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State' of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Cases or (laskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic cases or caskets, referring particu- Another ob j ect of my invention is the pro? vision of a metallic case having close-iitting joints which may be sealed with cement or other like `sealing substance to render the case completely air-proof, so as to protect the contents of the case 'against decay or injury from the elements, and to thus provide a practical' and inexpensive box or case which is adaptable for a great variety of uses.
Nith these and other objects in view, my invention consists of a case comprising separable sections, the sections having interlocking joints with each other, and clamps for adjustably securing the sections together, and the invention further comprises certain other novel features of construction, and combination of parts substantially as herein disclosed.
Figure l, is a perspective view of a case constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view thereof, to show the manner in which lthe top, sides and bottom are secured together. Fig. 3, is a cross sectional view of one of the corners of the case, the view being taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4, is a broken sectional view of a modiied form of connection for the top and "sides ofthe box, and Fi 5, is a similar view of another slightly medied form ofthe same, and., Fig. 6 is a sectional view of another form of the same;
My improved box or casing is made of metal, preferably sheet steel, wbichmay be readily stamped or rolled into-the desired form, and in the accompanying drawings;
the numeralw 1, indicates the top of a box embodying lmy' invention, the said top or cover having the downwardly turned. outer iiange 2, formed on its edges. y
The numeral 3, designates one of the sides of the box which is formed with a plain upper edge, and the lower edge is doubied over o'r,v
bent back upon its'eif to provide a groove or recess 4, and the extreme edgey is tnence directed outwardly at an angie to provide v'the retaining or securing flange" 5, as clearly illustrated'in Fig. 2. The top, sides and ends may be formed with tire raisedv or em' bossed panels if desired, this feature being a mere matter of taste.- rhe bottom @of the bon is formed with the downwardiy struck annular iiange 8, adapted 'to be ene gaged in tne groove or trough e, in the lower edge of the side, the groove being of the, nroper' size to forni a close joint.- A turn button 9, is pivoted at 10, on the outer face of the bottom and the forward end of the.`
button is adapted to engage the retaining flange on the extreme edge of the side lilember, and. as-many of these turn buttons' are provided as are necessary to 'securely iock the sides andrbottom together, the' ends being formed and secured in the same manner as are the sides.
The corners of the sides and ends are connectedby means of the angular corner posts il, having the ,inturned edges l2, adapted to engage and interlockA with outwardly turned edges i3, on the ends of the side and end sections. To render the joints between the members air tight, a cement filling '14, or other sealing substance may be poured the joints, as shown in the sectional views.
In order to provide for a close joint` and seal between the sides and theA top ofthe box, iemploy a connecting member i5, as sh'pwn in Fig. 2. This member has an annular recess 16, formed'therein which engages and fits over the upper edge of the sides, and is -iurther provided with a'trougiier y Fei-shaped tact with the rubber or other gasket useds` and the flange on the outer edge ofthe cover,
` makes close connection with the outer wall o'r the connecting member. Clamping Hooks i9, are pivoted in lugs or., ears ljcarried on the sides and mends of tigebox, and the en` member or strip, is simply doubled heck which is generally useful Wherever e hermeteve,
tremitiesmof the hooks project inwardly over the edgel of the cover, clamping screws 2]., being mounted in the extremities of Athe hooks to clamp the cover against the gasket.
In Fig. e, the connecting member is formed with en annuler channel 22, fitting over the edge of the side, and the inner portion ofthe member 'is doubled heel; upon itself es et 23, and extended straight upward so es to be engaged by, the edge ofthe cover. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, this connecting upon itself to provide the trough 24 for the reception oi the edge ofthe side section, and the outer edge ol the strip is directed laterally to form e supporting flange 25, upon which the cover rests and is supported.
From the foregoing description teken in connection with the drawings, it Will be looX which accomplishes all the results set forth es the objects of my invention, and
icelly sealed box or cese is desired.
ln the modification illustrated in Fig. 6 the intermediate or connecting stripis of S-sheped formation in crosssection to provide the oppositely-disposed troughs or: grooves 26 and 27, Which'ere adapted to reveo ceive the side of the box and the depending edge of the cover respectively.
I claim:
1. A sheet metal casket comprising e hot-` tornhaving downturned annuler edges, sides end ends having their lower edges doubled hack to providee groove-wey to receivethe ilenged edges of the bottom and further pro vided with en singularly directed. securing flange to abut against the bottom, turn but tonspivoted to the bottom to clamp against seid securing Range, and ineens tor securing the abutting ends of the side and end sections.
In testimony whercoi l niliX my sign eture in presence of tWo Witnesses.
y ANGUS McKEhlZlE.
litnesses:
