W. C. KEYWORTH. v MACHINE FOR WINDING, LUSTERING, AND PINISHING SILK, &o.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.1, 1906.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2v 33u23?, @tibia-11m? Z drawn from a bobbin *'7n to a bobbin etor from a bobbin 7- through the bath and over the heated surface to the hobbin -4-.
The bath may be removed and 'the thread or filament -amay be Wound from the swift onto the bobbin -4-. Hence my machine may be employed as conditions arise, either for a winding machine, a redrawing machine, or for alustering and finishing machine; or for a redrawing, refinishing and relustering machine; or, for a winding, finishing and lustering machine. From the construction shown and described, it will be seenthat all of the said operations may be going on at the same time in a single machine; that as each thread or filament has its individual bath, threads or filaments of' different colors may be treated without injuryto the colors, which would occur if many threads of different colors were passing through the same bath 5 that if desired coloring matter might be mixed in a bath to suit the coloring of the thread or filament passing or to be passed through said particular bath, thus winding, coloring, finishing and lustering the thread or filament in one continuous operation.
The bars --20- support the basin -22- and a collar -21- serves as an adjusting device for basin which has shoulders -30 adapted to rest on the bars 20-.
machine frame-extendinGr longitudinally therewith on both sides tzhereof. Heat is furnished through the supply pipes -12 and -14- and circulates through the return pipes -13- and -15-.
The lever-arms 17- and -19- may be adjusted to and fixed at any desirable angle in relation to the heated surface -11- for the purpose of determining the extent of contact the thread or filament has with said heated surface-and to regulate the tension of the thread or filament passing over the rollersl6- and 1S-which are mounted in the outer ends of said lever-arms.
The surplus moisture is removed from the thread or filament as it emerges from the liquid bath by the knife -26- and brush -27-" which are held in suitable su ports or brackets inside the basin 22`al))ove the surface of the liquid. Both the knife and the brush may be removed and :leaned as often as is necessary.
The roller Z4-is removable and the tension of the thread or filament a causes the spindle of said roller to turn in the journal formed by the extreme end of the anglegrooves `25- on the inner sides ofthe basin.
rlhe sides of the basin -22- extend beyond the end thereof and the roller -28- is mounted to turn so that thethread o r filament may pass down between said extended sides clear of' 4the end of the basin.
To prevent the accumulation of matter that fouls the heating surface in machines of Boxes -2 to hold bobbins are secured to the this kind, I provide the knife and brush and provide a heated surface that has no edges to come in contact with the thread or filament after it has passed the brush and knife which substantially clean it as it leaves the bath. Means for regulating the delivery or supply of the threadvor filament from the swift may consist of the ordinary Weight 78 as shown in Fig. 3, or other'suitable device.
The individual heating surfaces and baths facilitate the manipulation ofl the threads or filaments, and avoid the trouble, delay and expense resulting from the simultaneous treatment of a mass of threads or filaments in the same bath, and traveling over the same heated surface,-o\ving to the massing of the Wet threads or filaments, the tangling and breaking and searching for the broken ends.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 3, lmy machine permits free and unobstructed access to each and every thread or filament from the time it leaves the swift until Wound upon the receiving bobbin.
My machine may he constructed ofV any length and capacity to meet the requirements of'the trade. A manufacturer may not have the floor space for a large machine and onemay be made accordingly.
Many mechanical changes and modifica j tions may be made in my machine Without departing from the scope and essential spirit of my invention, and I wish to claim, and .do claim the benefit of all advantages and uses for which my machine is suitable, even though some of said advantages or uses may not have been enumerated or described in this specification.
With this description of my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. In a machine for Winding, lustering and finishing silk thread or fiber, the combination with a france and thread-carriers mounted thereon, of a series of individual basinsfor liquid below the same, one for the treatment of each thread or fiber as it comes down from its spool or carrier, a series of vertically arranged, individual heating bodies below said basins, one for each thread or filament, and means for causin0V each thread to travel vertically on both sides of its heating body after leaving its basin, and thence on to its receivin spool, for the fpurposes specified, and sustantially as set orth.
2. In a machine for winding, lustering and finishing silk thread, a frame, delivering and receiving s ools mounted thereon in combination wit a series of vertically arranged individually heating bodies located below said basins, one for each thread, and means for Winding each thread upon its receiving spool as it is drawn from the basin and about its heating body, and causing each of said individual threads a series of individual basins for liquid, one for the treatment of each thread,
able, and carried in said basin above the surto travel in a separate and substantially parallel course, from start to finish, substantially set forth.
3. ln a machine for iinishing silk threads, a frame, a-removable basin for containing liquid in which the thread is to be immersed, l adjustably held thereon, in Combination with l removable and revoluble rollers mounted in k said' basin, a knife and a brush, both removaee ol the liquidand arranged substantially set l'ortl.` 4.
