Be it known that I, GEORGE H. TILFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Charms, Hat-Pins, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to the construction of a charm, setting, hat-pin head, or the like, and has for its object to provide a device of this character constructed of a plurality of parts or members, which members may be connected together to produce the finished article without the use of solder.

It is well known in the manufacture of inexpensive jewelry that numerous advantages are obtained by being able to assemble the parts Without the use of solder. A particular disadvantage in the use of solder is the discoloration of the finished parts upon the application of heat necessary to melt the solder, which is entirely obviated in articles formed of my improved construction.

Another feature of my device is that the parts may be assembled very rapidly and without the employment of skilled labor.

The invention is fully set forth in this specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a finished hat-pin head and a portion of the pin stem. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of the upper plate of the head. Fig. 3shows a detail of one of the side members showing the inner face thereof. Fig. 4is an edge view of said side member looking upward from the lower edge. Fig. 5is a detail of the fastening plate. Fig. 6is a detail, partly in section, of the center hub to the upper end of which the fastening plate is secured. Fig. 7 shows the top plate in section and the inner face of one of the side plates, the locking fingers in said side plate engaging said top plate whereby the two members are connected together. Fig. 8is an edge view of the head showing the side members in section and in position on the central hub, and also showing the ends of the fastening plate as having been passed through apertures in said side plates to hold the latter firmly in osition. Fig. 9is a plan view of the ead with the top plate removed showing the rounded edges of the side plates and the fastening plate engaging said side plates to hold them together.

Referring to the drawings at 1-1 are the two side members of the hat-pin head or charm. These members may be made in any desired design or form and of any desired material but the same are preferably struck up from a soft, pliable sheet metal adapted to have its edges bent around to meet each other at their ends in the manner illustrated in Fig. 9. In the formation of these members pliable fingers or clips 2'2 extend out from the upper edge of each and an aperture 3 is provided through the face of the member for the reception of the fastening plate hereinafter described. The inner face of each member is also provided with a groove 4 preferably semi-circular in form extending from the lower. edge of the member up into said aperture 3. At 5, see Fig. 2, is

the top or face plate of the article which may be made in any desired form or design but is herein shown as being constructed in a rectangular shape provided at either end with an elongated slot or aperture 66 which are for the purpose of receiving the pliable clips or fingers 22 extending from members 1. At 7 is a central socket member having an upwardly extending shank 8 across the u per end of which is preferably riveted the astening plate 9. This plate is preferably made of a thin pliable material adapted to be readily bent to engage the side members. A hole 10 is drilled into the end of said socket member for the purpose of receiving the pin stem 11 when it is desired to use the head for an ornamental hatpin. Most of these parts are constructed by punch and die work and are shaped by one operation into the desired form ready to be assembled. The edges of the two side members may be left straight or bent around so as to form the ends of the head, if desired, in the manner best illustrated in Fig. 9. After the parts are plated, dipped, or colored the side members l-l are placed together on the central socket member 7, the shank 8 of which fits nicely into the grooved portion 4 in the same. member and the hat-pinis completed withthese members in the manner illustrated in Fig. 8, thereby holding said plates securely in position on the socket member. The top plate 5 is then placed onto the upper end of these members the clips or fingers 22 passing through the slots 66 in said plate and are bent over at either end in the manner illustrated in Fig. 7, securely fastening said late in position. The pin stem is then forced into the drill hole 10 in the socket out the use of solder.

When it is desired to use this head as a charm, or setting, the pin-stem is removed and a ribbon, chain or other suspending device may be readily attached to this socket member.

A charm, setting, hat-pin or the like of my improved construction may be made very rapidly without the employment of skilled labor, thereby reducing the cost of production to a minimum.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. An article of jewelry comprising side members provided with attaching fingers, a top plate engaged by said fingers, and a member located between said side members and having a socket, said member being also provided with flexible means to engage the adj acent portions of said side members.

2. An article of jewelry comprising side members provided with attaching fingers, a top plate engaged by said fingers, a member provided with a socket and located between said side members, and a flexible fastening plate carried by said socket member engaging said side members.

3. An article of jewelry comprising a top plate, side members having means for engaging said top plate, and a member having a socket, and also provided with flexible means for engaging said side members.

4. An article of jewelry comprising a top plate, a plurality of side members, flexible means for uniting said plate and said side members, and a member having a socket and provided with flexible means for engaging said side members.

5. An article of jewelry comprising a top plate, side members having means for engaging said top plate, a member provided with a l socket and interposed between said side members, and a flexible fastening plate carried by the socket member and engaging said side members.

6. An article of jewelry comprising a slotted top plate, side members having fingers engaging the slots of said plate, said side members being provided with openings, and a member provided with a socket to receive a pin and located between said side members and having a flexible fastening plate extended through the openings in said side members.

7. An article of jewelry comprising a slotted top plate, side members having fingers engaging the slots of said plate, said side members being grooved, and a member provided with a socket to receive a pin and fitting in the grooved portions of the side members and provided with flexible fastening means engaging said side members.

8. An article of jewelry comprising a top plate, side members provided with means for engaging said top plate, said side members being grooved and provided each with an opening, and a member having a socket to receive a pin and fitting in the grooved portions of said side members and provided with a locking plate extended through the openings of said side members.

9. An article of jewelry comprising a top plate, side members engaging said top plate, a member interposed between said side plates and having a soefket in its exposed end, and a securing plate at the other end of said interposed member engaging said side mem bers.

10. An article of jewelry comprising a top plate, side members secured thereto and each provided with a groove, a pinsupport ing member having a shank fitting in the grooves of said side members, the exposed end of said pinsupporting member being provided with an aperture to receive a pin, and a securing plate at the other end of said pinsupporting member engaging said side members.
