To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS G. ANsPAoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ida, in the county of Monroe and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and the object of the invention is the provision of a wrench which may be used either as a ratchet wrench or as -a4 monkey wrench.
A further object of the invention is the provision in a wrench of this character, of means for adjusting the jaws of the wrench which are designed to be actuated by the manipulation of the wrench handle.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character which is so constructed that the head carrying the movable jaws may be readily removed and a head of another type substituted therefor.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the detailed description hereinafter when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is shown, and wherein like numerals of reference refer to similar parts in the several views.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved wrench. Fig.- 2 is a fragmentary longitudinal section showing the ,structure of the actuating pawls. Fig. 3 is a section of line 3-3 of Fig. l, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a modification.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings A designates the body of the wrench which terminates at its lower end in a cylindrical shank a, upon which is mounted to. rotate the handle B.
C designates the wrench head which is designed to be rotatably connected 'with the body of the wrench in the manner to be hereinafter pointed out, and which comrises a base c and parallel side walls c having formed therein longitudinal grooves c2, which are adapted to be engaged by tongues d projecting from the sides of the oppositely disposed jaws D which are mounted to slide between the side walls c of the head C.
E designates a shaft, the oppositeends of which are threaded in opposite directions and pass through the jaws D and have a threaded engagement therewith. The central portion of the shaft E is supported in a boxing f in such a manner that it is free to rotate therein, but is held against longitudinal movement, said boxing being carried by the end of a 'shaft F which projects through the base of the head C and the body of the wrench A. The outer end of the shaft F is provided with an annular channel f therein, which is engaged by a suitable key f 2 secured in the body of the wrench A, so that the body of the wrench may be turned freely on said shaft, but cannot be moved longitudinally thereof. The body of the wrench A is provided with a cavity o therein through which the shaft F passes, and carried by said shaft and positioned within said cavity is a ratchet wheel G.
G G designate a pair of pivotally mounted spring pressed pawls which are carried by the body A and the upper ends of which are adapted to normally engage the ratchet wheel G on opposite sides of the center thereof.
I-I designates a sleeve, which is rotatably mounted upon the lower end of the body A of the wrench and is provided at its upper end with a flange h extending partially therearound, the edges of said flange being tapered so that upon rotation of the sleeve in either direction, one edge of the flange may be caused to ride over the lower end of one of the pawls G thereby holding said pawl in an inoperative position so that the wrench may be operated in one .direction as a ratchet' wrench. If it is desired to Voperate the wrench in the other direction as a ratchet wrench the sleeve H is rotated in the opposit direction until the flange 7L thereof engages the lower end of the other pawl G and releases the lower end of the pawl previously held. The flange It of the sleeve H is of such a length that both pawls may be caused to simultaneously engage the ratchet wheel for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly set forth. Loosely mounted upon the shaft F is a collar I, one end of which extends into the head C and is provided with a beveled gear i and the other end of which extends into the cavity a of the body A of the wrench and is provided with a beveled gear i. The beveled gear i of the sleeve I meshes continuously with a beveled gear e which is rigidly secured to the oppositely threaded shaft E, so that upon rotation of said sleeve l the jaws D may be adjusted to any desired extent. The rotation of the sleeve I is effected by means of a beveled gear y', which is mounted upon the upper end of a shaft J, which extends downwardly through the cylindrical shank a of the body A of the wrench and is rigidly connected in any suitable manner to the handle B. The handle B of the wrench is capable of a slight longitudinal movement upon the cylindrical shank a, so that the beveled gear may be moved into and out of engagement with the beveled gear i of the sleeve I. The shaft J is provided with a pair of annular grooves y" therein, either of which is adapted to be engaged by a projection Z: carried by a spring actuated catch K mounted upon the cylindrical shank a of the body of the wrench. The catch K serves to lock the shaft J in either its forward or rear position, but at the same time permits the same to be turned to effect the adjustment of the jaws D of the wrench.
In using the wrench, the sleeve H is first adjusted so that both of the pawls G G will engage the ratchet wheel G and the shaft F will be held against rotation. The latch K is then elevated and the handle moved forward a sufficient extent to cause the beveled gear j to engage the beveled gear i of the sleeve I when the handle is turned a sufficient extent to obtain the desired adjustment of the aws D. If, now, itis desired to use the wrench as a ratchet wrench the sleeve H is moved so head C, shaft F, and sleeve I that the flange h thereof will release either one of the pawls G G, according to the direction in which it is desired to manipulate the wrench, but if it is desired to use the wrench as an ordinary monkey wrench, both pa'wls are allowed to remain in engagement with the ratchet wheel G so that the wrench head C and the jaws D carried thereby will be locked to the body of the wrench and will move therewith.
Then using ratchet wrenches to remove nuts, difficulty is experienced by reason of the fact that after the nut has been loosened, the handle cannot be turned relatively to the jaws to secure a new purchase with the ratchet. To obviate this difficulty, the outer end of the shaft E terminates in a squared or irregular shaped portion f3 'which fits in a corresponding shaped opening in a disk F which is rotatably mounted in any suitable manner upon the exterior of the body of the wrench. With this construction, when the nut which it is desired to remove is loose, the operator merely presses on the disk F with one hand, thereby holding the nut and wrench head fixed so that the' handle may be turned relatively thereto and a new purchase obtained with the ratchet.
If it is desired to use a rigid socket instead of the wrench head C and the movable jaws D carried thereby, the key f2 is withdrawn from engagement with the annular channel f in the outer end of the shaft F and the carried thereby may then be removed from the body A of the wrench and in place thereof a rigid socket wrench L inserted. The socket wrench comprises a socket l of the usual construction a cylindrical extension Z, which is designed to engage the opening in the front wall of the body A of the wrench previously engaged by the sleeve I and which is provided at its outer end with a reduced portion Z2 which is designed to engage the opening in the rear wall of the body A of the wrench previously engaged by the outer end of the shaft F. The reduced portion l2 is provided with an annular groove therein which is designed to be engaged by a suitable key car ried by the body A of the wrench. The cylindrical portion l has formed thereon. a ratchet wheel l, which is designed to be engaged by 'either one or both of the pawls G G, in the manner heretofore described. In using this form of the wrench the shaft J is always maintained in its retracted position.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise form and construction shown in the drawings, as it is obvious that many minor changes maybe made thereto without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 2- 1. A wrench comprising a body, a handle mounted to rotate on and move longitudinally of said body, a head having a ratchet connection with said body, a pair of movable jaws mounted in said head, gearing for adjusting said aws including a gear carried by and movable with said handle, and means for locking said handle in Various positions of longitudinal adjustment.
2. A wrench comprising a body, a handle movably mounted thereon, a head having a ratchet connection with said body, a pair of movable jaws mounted in said head, a single lshaft having oppositely threaded portions in threaded engagement with said jaws, and gearing adapted to be actuated by the wrench handle for rotating said shaft.
3. A Wrench comprising a body, a handle mounted on said body, a shaft journaled loosely in said body, a ratchet wheel carried by said shaft, a pawl carried by the body and engaging said ratchetwheel, a wrench head mounted upon said shaft, a pair of oppositely disposed jaws mounted in said wrench head, a shaft journaled in the end of said first mentioned shaft and having oppositely threaded portions enga ing said jaws, and gearing for rotating said t ireaded shaft.
4. A wrench comprising a body, a handle mounted on said body, a shaft journaled a ratchet wheel carloosely in said body,

A wrench comprising a body, a handle mounted on said body, a shaft extending transversely of the body, a wrench head mounted on said shaft, a pair of oppositely disposed jaws mounted in said wrench head', a shaft journaled loosely in the end of said first mentioned shaft and having oppositely threaded portions eled gear carried by the threaded shaft, a sleeve mounted on said first mentioned shaft and provided with a beveled gear meshing with the beveled gear carried by the threaded shaft, and means for rotating said sleeve.
6. A wrench comprising a body, a handle mounted on said body, a shaft extending transversely of the body, a wrench head mounted on said shaft, a pair of oppositely disposed jaws mounted in said wrench head, a shaft journaled loosely in the end of said first mentioned shaft and having oppositely threaded portions engaging said jaws, a beveled gear carried by the threaded shaft, a sleeve mounted on said first mentioned shaft and provided with a beveled gear meshing with the beveled gear carried by the threaded shaft and means actuated by the wrench handle for rotating said sleeve.
7. A wrench comprising a body having a cavity in the upper portion thereof and terminating in a cylindrical shank, a handle mounted to rotate and move longitudinally on said shank, a shaft journaled loosely in said body and. provided with a ratchet wheel positioned in the cavity thereof, a pawl? carried by the body and adapted to engage said ratchet wheel, a wrench head mountedv on said shaft, a pair of oppositely disposed jaws mounted inl said wrench head, a shaft journaled loosely in the end of said first mentioned shaft and having oppositely .threaded portions engaging said jaws, a
bevel gear carried by the threaded shaft, a
sleeve mounted on said first mentioned shaft and provided with a with the bevel gear carried by the threaded shaft and with a bevel gear positioned within the cavity in the body of the wrench, a shaft mounted to move longitudinally in the body engaging said jaws, a bevof the wrench and connected at its lower end to the wrench handle, and a bevel gear secured to the upper end of said shaft and adapted to bemoved into and out of engagement with the bevel gear on the sleeve.

A wrench comprising a body, a shaft journaled in said body, means serving to lock said shaft against-longitudinal movement is said body but to permit rotation thereof, a wrench head carried by one end of said shaft, the other end of said shaft projecting without the body of the wrench and being provided with a portion of irregular contour, a disk rotatably mounted upon the exteriorv of the wrench body and provided with an opening adapted to receive the irregular portion of the shaft, a ratchet wheel carried by said shaft, and a pawl carried by said' body and adapted for engagement with said ratchet wheel.
9. A wrench comprising a body, a wrench head mounted on said body and having a ratchet connection therewith, a pair of movable jaws mounted in said head, a shaft having oppositely threaded portions in threaded engagement with said jaws, a gear carried by said threaded shaft, a sleeve having a gear meshing with said gear on the threaded shaft, a second gear carried by the sleeve, a longitudinally movable shaft mounted in the wrench body, and a gear carried by said shaft and adapted to be moved into engagement with the second gear of said sleeve.
10. A wrench comprising a body, a wrench head mounted on said body and having a ratchet connection therewith, a pair of movable jaws mounted in said head, a shaft having oppositely threaded portions in threaded engagement with said jaws, a gear carried by said threaded shaft, a sleeve having a gear meshing with said gear on the threaded shaft, a second gear carried by the sleeve, a longitudinally movable shaft mounted in the wrench body, a gear carried by said shaft and adapted to be moved into engagement with the second gear of said sleeve, and means for locking said shaft in various positions of longitudinal adjustment.
