Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
n. DEAN, or ooEocrAH, MioEIeAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED MANURE FORK AND HOOK.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 87,249, dated February 23, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, B. DEAN, of Cohoetah, in the county of Livingston, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Manure Fork and Hook; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a manure- 'Ork which may be very quickly and easily changed to an unloading-hook.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the manure-fork, and Fig. 2 the same when changed to a nianare-hook.
A represents the handle, on the top end of which is a slotted metallic end piece, B. The fork C is provided with an arm, D, which is inserted in the slot on the end piece, B, and a pin, a, passed through the same, which thus pivots the fork to the handle.
A metal socket or collar, E, is placed over the end piece, B, resting on a shoulder near the handle A. This collar is on one side provided with a slot, b, as seen in the drawings. The arm D being placed inside of the end piece, B, the colla-r E holds the fork steady, 4so
that it cannot turn on its pivot a.
When it is desired to change the instrument to a manure-hook, it is only necessary to turn the collar so that arm'D can pass out through the slot b. By turning the fork C on its pivot until it comes at right angles with the handle A, the arm D will extend on the opposite side. as shown in Fig. 2, and when the collar is turned again, so that its slot b is away from said arm, the fork is held stationary in that position.
I am aware that manure-forks have been constructed so as to turn or revolve upon the gandle, and do not claim this as my invention;
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the slotted end piece, B, and fork C, the slotted colla-r or ferrule E, for the purpose of holding the fork in either position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of December, 1868.
R. DEAN.
