UNITED STATES GORDON W. HALL, OF LOGKPORT, NEW YORK.
RAGCUTTIN G MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed March 30l 1907. Serial No. 365.515.
To'aZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GORDON W. HALL, a resident of Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rag-Cutting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act descri tion of the invention, such as will enable otiiers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in rag-cutting machines and more particularly to the cutter cylinder or head, the obj ect of the invention being to provide simple and efiicient means for rmly and quickly securing the knives to the cutter head or cylinder.
With this object in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out 1n the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a cutter head or cylinder embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the binder shoe.
1 represents a cutter head orcylinder provided at its ends with annular flanges 2, and having suitable sockets for the reception of the knives 3, only one of which latter is shown in the drawing. The head or cylinder 1 is provided with several series of lugs 9 (one series for each knife), and these lugs are made with concave seats 4 to form bearings for conical internally threaded nuts 5. These conical nuts also have bearings in concave seats 7 on a binding shoe 8 and the latter is adapted to bear against and bind the knife in place. The nuts 5 are thus located between the lugs 9 on the head 1 and the binder shoe 8. Threaded studs 10 are secured to the head between the concave seats in the lugs 9 and the shoe 8 and on these studs the conical nuts are adapted to screw. Each nut is also provided with a transverse slot 11 for the reception of a suitable wrench.
From the construction and arrangement of parts as above described, it will be seen that when a knife has been placed in position, with the binder shoe bearing against one face thereof, the insertion of the conical nuts on the threaded studs between the lugs 9 and shoe 8 Will cause the latter to force the knife against its bearing on the head. As these nuts are turned on the studs 10 the conical l nuts will be fed toward the head 1, thus pressing the shoe 8 against the knife and I binding the latter securely in place.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention Without l departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. The combination with a cylindrical cutter head and a longitudinally disposed knife, of bearings on the head, a longitudinally disposed binder shoe having the bearing faces, and conical devices disposed between the bearings on the head and bearings on the shoe for causing the latter to bind the knife to the head.
2. The combination with a cylindrical cutter head and a longitudinally disposed knife, of a series of lugs on the head, a longitudinally disposed shoe to bind the knife to the head, and conical devices between the lugs on the head and the shoe.
3. The combination with a cylindrical cutter head and a longitudinally disposed knife, of a series of lugs on the head, a longitudinally disposed shoe to engage the knife and bind it to the head, conical devices between the lugs on the head and said longitudinally disposed shoe, and threaded studs secured to the head and on which the conical devices are adapted to screw.
4. The combination with a cylindrical cutter head and a longitudinally disposed knife, of a longitudinally disposed shoe to bear against the knife, bearings on the head and devices having inclined faces disposed between the bearings on the head and the shoe to cause the latter to bind the knife longitudinally of the head.
5. The combination With a cutter head having a knife socket, and a screw secured in the bottom of said socket, of a binding shoe for a knife located in said socket, and a cone threaded on said screw and cooperating with said shoe to bind the knife to the cutter head.
6. The combination with a cutter head provided with a series of bearing lugs, and
a cutter in front of said lugs, 'of a shoe bear- In testimony whereof, I have signed ing against said cutter, a serles of screws specification in the presence of two subsecured to the head and disposed between soribing witnesses.
