POCKET TOBACCO BOX AND CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907'.
Application file February 11 1907. Serial No. 356.722.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC Z. COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Pocket Tobacco Box and Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pocket tobacco box and cutters, and has for its object to provide a box for carrying tobacco in the pocket by which the contents of the box may not only be kept clean and also kept from contaminating other things in the pocket, but by which it may be manipulated to cut off a chew from the plug of tobacco.
The invention consists of the new and novel parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box showing the tobacco in one compartment in position to be cut, and the reserve piece of tobacco in position in the other compartment. 2 is a top plan view, the cover of the upper part of the body of the box being removed. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the carrier. Fig. 4 is a front view of the carrier.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forn'iing part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the body of the box, which may be composed of any sheet metal suitable for the purpose, and which is provided with a central longitudinal partition 2 extending the entire length thereof, and forming two compartments 3 and 4t for the tobacco. ()no end of the box 1 is cut away slightly and open at the top to permit the tobacco to come out of the compartments 3 and A. The front end of the box 1 is provided with a knife 5 over which the plug of tobacco rests when the latter is to be cut. The cover 6 of the box is also provided with a knife 7 at one end which cooperates with the knife 5.
The compartment 3 is provided with a carrier 8 having a stem 9 which projects through the elongated slot 10 in the body of the box and has a head 11 011 its upper end. The plug of tobacco 12 is secured at one end to the carrier 8 by the pin 13 which projects from the side of the carrier and into the tobacco. At the front of the compartment 3, just back of the knife 5, is a flat spring 14 secured at its rear end to the bottom of the box and inclined upwardly toward the cutting edge of the knife 5. hen the cover 6 is raised the flat spring 1 1 will throw the end of the tobacco 12 up above the knife 5 and the tobacco can be moved out over the said knife by pushing the carrier 8 forward the desired distanccj the cover 6 is then closed over the box causing the cooperating knives 5 and 7 to cut the chew of tobacco.
The compartment 4 is provided for a reserve piece of tobacco 15 and is provided with a coiled spring 16 secured at its rear end and an incline 17 at the front end. \Vhon the reserve piece of tobacco 15 is placed in the compartment 1 the coiled spring 16 will be compressed and the front end of the tobacco 15 will impinge against the front end of the box. Vthcn it is desired to remove the tobacco 15 the front end of the latter is raised until it comes above the knife 5 when the spring 16 will throw it forward so that it may be caught by the fingers of the operator. It will be seen that the knives 5 and 7 cooperate in a manner to afford a shearing cut, and the plug of tobacco to be out being close to the fulcrum point of the knives, renders the cutting comparatively easy.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
In a pocket tobacco box and cutter, the body of the box having its forward end beveled to form a knife and provided with a cen tral longitudinal partition forming two compartments, a cover for the box having its forward end beveled to form a knife to cooperate with the beveled edge of the body, whereby a shearing cut is made when the cover is closed, a spring at the front end of one of said compartments to throw the end of the tobacco above the knife on the body of the box, means to move the tobacco forward over the knife, a coiled spring at the rear of the other compartment, and an incline at the front end of said compartment to guide the tobacco above the front end of the box when being removed therefrom.
