No. 's71,sss.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907.
Application filed June 6.1907. Swarm. 877.419.
Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUrs H. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residim at Rockdale, in the county of Milam and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Clip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, cheap, durable and eflicient form of clip that shall be adapted for use as a means for holding loose sheets of paper or plies of fabric assembled, or as a clothes pin or a garment supporter, which shall be easy to manipulate in attachment and detachment, and which will not in any way injure an article in connection with which it is em lo ed.
it the above and other objects in view as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a clip as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which llke characters of reference indicate. corresponding parts,Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a.clip constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof exhibiting the clamping members partly opened.
. The clip comprises two clamping members 1 and 2 that are herein shown as approximately circular incontour, and two levers or finger grips 3 and 4 that are preferably, though not of necessity, practically elliptical in form, and occupy outwardly-diverging planes relatively to the clamping members. The levers are integral with the clamping members and are joined thereto by inward curved necks 5, be tween which is disposed the rear portion Got the clamping member. This portion 6, as clearly shbwn in Fig. 1, extends some dis: tance beyond the adjacent peripheries of the clamping members and forms a fulcrum upon which the necks 5 bear, and through the agency of which the resistance to flexing on the part of the clamping members when the levers are operated to open them, 1s materially reduced. This feature is one of the greatestimportance inasmuch as by the provision of the fulcrum portion, wire of heavier gage may be emplo ed in theconstruction of the clip than Woul otherwise be possible, so
that the utility of the article will be largely increased as it will'have a more extended range of usefulness and a greater ada tability for various applications, as it may e emp oyed as a paper clip, or a clamp for holding plies of textile fabric assembled in being cut or otherwise, as a clothes pin or as a hanger for suspending an article of apparel from a nail or the like.
Another feature of novelty of the invention resides in the shape of the levers 3 and 4 and the utility resulting therefrom. As above stated, these levers are a proximatel elliptical in contour and are isposed wit their erimeters in planes approximately parallel with those of the clamping members in order to present broad bearing surfaces to the fingers of the user, and further to provide loops that may engage with a nail or other projection to hold an article of apparel sus pended. It will be noted by reference to Fig. 1 that the terminals 7 of the lever loops 8 bear upon the lever 100 s 9 at or adjacent to the necks 5, by whic arrangement the loops 8 will, positively be held against Iyielding relatively to the loops 9 when the 0 amping members are flexed in bei opened;
The article herein describe while simple in character, will be found of the highest efliciency and durability in use, and owing to the novel manner in which the .parts are disposed and coact relatively to each other will impart a range of usefulness not present 1n ordinary cli s of this character.
What is c aimed is A clip embodying levers and coiled juxtaposed clamp'in members, one portion of which projects beyond the peripheries of the. I
L. H. PORTER.
