Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEODORE A. WsLsrt, a citizen of the United States, of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, post-ofiice address 1221 Market street, have invented a new Printing andDeveloping Dark Cabinet.

My invention relates to improvements in portable printing and developing dark cabinets and the object of my invention is to construct a dark cabinet so that an image may be projected from a negative into the cabinet and-a print thereof made. A further object of my invention is to provide means for developing the print without removing the same from the cabinet; a still further object of my invention is to provide means for focusing the print; and a still further object of my invention is to provide means by which the operator may see the interior of the cabinet and perform the different operations of the work without admitting light which would affect the sensitized print. I

In the drawings 1 represents a rectangular cabinet having upper and

lower compartments

The upper compartment is provided with an aperture 4 containing a lens 5. .Upon the outside of the cabinet are securedtelescoping tubes 6, and 7 which aline with the aperture 4 in the. cabinet and direct the .rays of light to the lens. The said tube 6 carries a vertical rod 8 upon which is adjustably mounted'a horizontal rod 9 carrying a plate holder 10 to receiyea negative. The plate holder 10 is adjustably secured upon the horizontal rod 9 by a set-screw 11; set-screws are provided upon the horizontal rod 9,

which stops may be set at different'points upon the horizontal rod so that the negative may be quickly focused adjacent either stop.

An arc lamp 14 is used as a source of light for printing. The rays of light are projected from the lamp through the negative in the holder 10, and the lens 5

12 and 13 having onto a sensitized surface, preferably a card, mounted in a holder 16 which is adjustable vertically, laterally and longitudinally so that the sensitized card may be properly focused.

The card holder is shown in detail in Figs. 5-45 7 and 8 and consists of a frame 17 having a back 18. An opening 19' is formed at one end of the frame for inserting the card. The saidopening is funnel shaped for the better admission of the card, curved edges 20 and 21 are provided on the frame to form said funnel. The back 18 of the card holder is provided with a slot 22 so that the card may be inserted from the rear in place of the end. -The slot 22 is made with a curved edge 23 on one side, so that the side of the card having the sensitized surface may be slightly concaved to prevent the same from being injured when the card is being inserted or removed.

25 and 26 for holding mats in front of the sensitized card. which mats have apertures formed therein which may be of various forms such as ovals, stars, hearts or thelike.

The back of the card holder 16 is provided with a cleat 28 which is held in the slot 29 formed in the depending bracket 30. A nut and screw 31 are provided to secure the card holder at any desired height upon the bracket.

The bracket is mounted on a rack 32 having a slot 33 formed therein through which passes the bolt 34 of the bracket 30. By means of the thumb nut 35 on the bolt 34 the head of the bracket may be clamped at any desired place upon the rack.

Stops36 and 37 are provided upon the rack 32 which may be secured by thumb-screws38 at different points on the rack so that the card holder may be quickly shifted from one focus to another and again brought back to a position adjacent either stop.

The rack 32 is adjustable laterally by being mounted on

39 and 40 at either end of the cabinet upon which the rack slides and on which the rack may be secured by means of the thumb-nuts 41 and 42.

The cabinet is provided with a hood 45 having a nonactinic sliding glass 46 and alsoa sliding cover 47 over said glass. Through the glass 46 may be seen the interior of the cabinet. The end of the cabinet is also provided with an aperture covered by a sliding panel '48 and a non-actinic' glass through which the card holder 16 may be seen for the purpose of focusing.

Thelower cor'npartmentof the cabinet forms a tank 61 for receiving waste chemicals which may be poured into the tank through a funnel 62.

The cabinet is provided'with an open panel at one side which is covered bya bag 63 as shown in Fig. 1. The bag is provided with an opening 64 through which the arm maybe inserted to'manipula't'e the parts in the interior of the cabinet.

The opening 64 of the bag 63 is normally held closed by an elastic band 65 and to readily open the same I provide an opening device consisting of two curved members 66 and 67.having connecting pieces 68 pivoted to them and pivoted to each other at the points 69, at which points they are secured to the elastic band 65.' The lower curved member 67 is provided with a footpiece 71 and. the upper curved member is'provided with a handle .72 so that the two members may be separated and thereby open the bag the hand. I The curtain is normally held in the raised position by weights 76 and is pressed the hand which is admitted through the bag. The curtain will, prevent any light entering the cabinet when the hand is being passed through the opening 64 of the bag.

The operation of my invention is as follows: Either a wet or dry negative having an'image thereon is placed -in the plate-holder l0 and the telescoping tube extended to cover the plate holder. .By placing one hand throughthe opening 64 in the bag 63 and the other hand in the glove 74 the curtain is ,forceddown.. Thecard holder is then brought into proper focus, which may be readily done by the operator looking through the nonp of the cabinet or at the end of the cabinet. Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by LettersPatent:

1. In a device 01' the character described the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having an aperture formed therein, a plate holder, a card holder, means for adjusting said card holder, said cabinet having an open panel, a bagto cover said panel,'and means for tion' of the hand in said bag, substantially as described.

4. In a device of the character described the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having auaperture formed therein, aplate holder, a card holder, a bracket carrying said card holder upon which said card holder is adjustable vertically, a rack upon which said bracket is slidably mountedfa track on which said rack is slidably mounted and setscrews'for holding the parts in a fixed position, substantially as described.

5 In a device of thevcharacter described the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having an aperture formed therein, a plate holder, :1 card holder, a bracket carrying said card holder, a rack upon which said bracket is slidably mounted and stops on said rack to limit the movement of said bracket, substantially as described. In a device of the character described the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having an aperture formed therein, a plate holder, a card holder, a bracket carrying saidcard holder, and means for adjusting said bracket, said card holder having curved flanges for directing the card into the same, substantially as described.

7. In a device of the character described the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having an aperture formed therein, a plate holder, alcard holder, a bracket carrying said card holder, andineans for adjusting said bracket, said card holder having a slot formed in the back of the same for 'the admission of a card, substantially as described.

8. Inc device of the character described the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having an aperture" formed therein, a plate holder, a card holder, a bracket. carrying said card holder, said card holder having a groove formed therein to receive a on rd, and grooves formed therein to re ceive a mat to cover said card, substantially 'as described.

9. In a device of the character described the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having an aperture formed therein, a plate holder, a card holder, means for adjusting said card holder, said cabinet having an open panel a bag to cover said panelfsaid bag having an opening formed therein, an elastic band to close said opening, and an upper curved member and a lower curved member pivoted together and secured to said elastic band, substantially as described.

15. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having an aperture formed therein, a plate holder, a card holder, means for adjusting said card holder, said cabinet having an open panel, a bag to cover said panel, said bag having an opening formed therein, an elastic band in said opening, two members secured to said elastic band, a foot piece connected to one of said members and a hand piece on said other member, substantially as described.

16. In a device of the character described the combination of a cabinet, said cabinet having an aperturetormed therein, a plate holder, a card holder, means for adjusting said card holder, said cabinet having an open panel. a bag to cover said panel, a curtain located adjacent said open panel and means for holding said curtain normally in a closed position, substantially as described.
