UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD P. GLAZIER, OF CHELSEA, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO GLAZIER STOVE COMPANY, I CHELSEA, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION.
ALCOHOL-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD P. GLAZIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chelsea, county of Washtenaw, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Alcohol-Burners, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which iorm a part of this specification.
This invention relates to alcohol burners for domestic purposes; and has for its object an improved burner adapted and intended to be used for a steady combustion of alcohol, especially for cooking purposes, in which the flame is burned at the top of a plate that forms the cover or upper limit of a gas chamber.
In the drawingz-Figure 1, shows the burner in elevation. Fig. 2, is a vertical section, taken longitudinal of the gas valve. Fig. 3, is a plan view. Fig. 4, is a vertical section of a slightly modified arrangement of piping.
The liquid fuel is introduced into a stand pipe 1 through a feed pipe 2. The stand pipe is preferably filled with some fibrous material, such as asbestos fiber. Surrounding the summit of the stand pipe, riding slightly above it, and spaced from it by an annular chamber 3, is a gas chamber 4. Leading from the gas chamber is a pipe 5, which conveys the gas from the top of the stand pipe 1 into the gas chamber 4; the travel of gas through this pipe is controlled by a needle valve 6. The upper plate of the gas chamber 4 is provided with perforations 7 through which the gas escapes, and is burned at the summit of the plate. perforations 8 through the vertical inner wall 9 of the chamber furnish a supply of gas which is directed towards, and is burned against, the upper end of the stand pipe 1, heating the pipe to a temperature to gasify or vaporize the fluid in the upper end of the stand pipe, whence it escapes through holes 10 into the gas conducting pipe 5. A small cup 11 is located on the stand pipe in a suitable place to receive a supply of liquid through the valve closed passage 12 in pipe 13, and this supply of fiuid serves for the primary or initial heating of the stand pipe.
Other Patented Nov. 5, 1907.
In alternative construction shown in Fig. 4, the pipe 15, instead of extending entirely through the stand pipe 21, leads out from the top of it to an elbow 16,
whence the pipe joins an inlet pipe 17 leading directly This passage is controlled into the gas chamber 14. by needle valve 18.
entire burner to rise higher sides of the burner.
What I claim is than it does toward the In an alcohol vaporizer, in combination with a retort, a feed pipe leading thereinto from beneath, a gas containing' chamber surrounding the top of the retort and spaced therefrom, the interior side walls of said chamber and its top being perforated to permit the flow of vapor therethrough, and a conductor pipe within said gas containing chamber adapted to conduct the vapor liberated from the retort directly to the interior of said gas containing cham ber, substantially as described.
2. In an alcohol vaporizer, the combination of a stand pipe, a fibrous filling therefor, 21. supply'pipe leading thereinto from beneath, a gas distributing chamber surrounding the upper portion 01 the pipe and spaced therefrom at the top and sides, the top of said chamber being perforated for the escape of vapor for ignition thereabove, and means within said chamber whereby the direct flow of vapor from said stand pipe into said distributing chamber may be controlled, substantially as described.
5;. An alcohol burner, having in combination with a re tort provided with means for feeding fluid thereinto, a combustion chamber surrounding the same and having its walls adjacent thereto at the top and sides spaced therefrom, the top wall of said chamber being perforated for the escape of gas whose ignition thereabove is desired, means within said chamber for regulating the direct flow of gas from the retort thereinto, a cup for initial lighting extending about said retort below said chamber, and a valve whereby the flow of alcohol from the retort into said cup may be regulated, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
HAROLD l". GLAZIER.
