COAT AND HAT BACK. 7
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1907.
Application filed May 19, 1906. Serial No. 317,769.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, GEORGE W. CHUBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Coat and Hat Racks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coat, hat and umbrella racks and has for its object certain new and useful improvements in racks which are adapted to carry coats, hats and similar articles and at the same time to have them locked thereon to prevent the same from being taken by other parties than the owners. Means for releasing these articles when desired are also provided as will be described in detail in the following specification, shown in the drawings and more fully pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification and accompanying same the same reference characters are used to designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a front view of the hat, coat and umbrella rack constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detailed sectional View of part of the mechanism. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the umbrella holder. Figs. 5 and 6 are sectional details of the unlocking mechanism.
The device is supposed to occupy a place on the wall of a building and suitable panels may be arranged on said wall for the reception of the various parts and arranged with advertising scenes or ornamental effects, having near the floor line platform 10 with a cup 11 for the reception and drainage of umbrellas. A short distance above the platform 10 is arranged a clamp 12 in which the umbrella or cane is adapted to be held and further up along the panel work or wall is a box 13 having at its lower end two jaws 14 and 15, the former being stationary and a part of the box 13 while the shank 16 of the jaw 15 slides in the lower part of the box and is attached by means of a link 17, as shown in Fig. 3, to a lever 18 also connected by means of a link 19 with a vertical slide 20, having a knob or handle 21, and provided with a lock 22 of ordinary construction and whose bolt 23 may be shifted by means of a key. The shifting of this bolt 23 is permitted by means of a coin 24 which is dropped into a chute 25, as shown in Fig. 6, and falls beneath a plunger 26 which is normally held up by a spring 27, but when the plunger is depressed it forces down the coin against one end of a lever 28 which carries a latch 29 playing in a notch 30 in the bolt 23.
In forcing the 'slide downward it carries with it a rod 31. having lateral arms 32 and 33, the former arm working in conjunction with a hook 34 while the lateral arm 33 carries at its outer end a pin 35 which plays in the slot 36 of a pivoted arm 37, likewise cooperating with a hook 38, and it will be clearly seen that when these arms 32 and 37 are carried away from their respective hooks it is possible to then hang a hat, coat or other wearing apparel thereon. With the upward movement of the slide 20 the movable jaw 15 is also carried away from the stationary jaw so that the handle of an umbrella can be inserted therein, and then upon the'downward movement of the slide these parts are returned to the position shown in the drawings and the articles are locked as heretofore described.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary jaw, of a slidably mounted jaw cw operating with the stationary jaw, a pivotally mounted lever connected to the slid-ably mounted jaw, a slide connected to the lever, a hook, and a rod connected to the slide and provided with a lateral arm coiiperating' witlrthe hook.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary jaw, of a slidably mounted jaw cooperating with the stationary jaw, a pivotally mounted lever, a link connection between the lever and slidably mounted jaw, a slide, a link connection between the slide and lever. a hook, and a rod secured to the slide and provided with an arm cooperating with the hook.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary jaw, of a slid-ably mounted jaw codperating with the stationary jaw, 21 pivotally mounted lever. a link connection between the lever and slidably 5 mounted jaw, a slide, a link connection between the slide and lever, a hook, a rod secured to the slide and provided with an arm coiiperating; with the hook, and a locking means carried by the slide.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary jaw, of a movable jaw slidably mounted upon the stationary jaw, n pivotally mounted lever connected to the movable jaw, and a slide connected to the lever.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a stationary jaw, of a movable jaw slidably mounted upon the stationary jaw, :1 pivctally mounted lever, a link connection between the lever and the slidably mounted jaw, a slide, and a link connection between the slide and the lever.
G. In a device of-the character described, the combination with coiiperating jaws, of operating means connected with one of the jaws, a lock secured to the operating means and having the bolt thereof provided with a notch, a pivotally mounted lever, a member secured to the lever for engagement in the notch of the bolt, and means by which the lever may be operated to withdraw the member from the notch.
7. Ina device of the character described, the combination with a stationary jaw, of a movable jaw mounted for coiiperation with the stationary jaw, a pivotally mounted lever connected to the movable jaw, a slide connected with the lever, a lock secured to the slide, and a retractable ber secured to the lever for engagement in the notch 01 10 means adapted to prevent the withdrawal of the bolt of the bolt, and means by which the lever may be operated to the lock. withdraw the member from the notch.
