APPLIUATION FILED JULY 1'1. 1007.

WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 29, 1907'.
Application filed J'uly 17| 1907- Serial No. 384,212-
To all whom it may conce/m:
Be it known that I, EUGENE H. VANnnnsmcn, a citizen of the United States oi r.\merica, residingI at Jamestown, in the county oi Mercer and State oi Pennsylvani-a7 have invented certain new and usei'ul improvements in Wrenches, oi which the lollowing is a specili- Cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to wrenches and its object is, to provide a device oi' this character oi' simple and inexpensive constrnction, adapted to be readily adjusted.
The improvement will be full y described hereinai ter, in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this speeiiication` and its features oi novelty will be delined in the appended claims.
In the drawing:*li`igure t is a side elevation oi' the invention7 Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same, and, Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
The reference numeral l designates the shank ot' the wrench provided at its upper end with a iixed jaw 2, and at its lower end with a siem 3 to which a handle i is attached by a snit-able nut 5.
A movable jaw (i is mounted for sliding movement on the shank, and is formed with transversely extending slot l0, within which are pivotally secured two coperating oppositely disposed clamping jaws vll and l2, each formed with a semi-circular threaded recess 'i3 to receive the jaw adjusting screw 9 which is received in a bore 8 provid-ed in the jaw (S. A coil spring l.i. is interposed between the two jaws l lt and l2 to hold them normally in engagement with the screw. In order to prevent the forcing towards each other of the inner ends o1 the clamping jaws `.ll and l2 and thus release the same fromjthe screw 9 the jaw o is recessed at the inner end of the slot l() so as to give'a clearance between the inner faces of ends 18 of said clamping jaws7 and said jaw G, as clearly seen in Fig. 3. Below the jaw 6, a
bracket .l5 is secured upon the shank l, said bracket having a bearing tii for the lower end ol` the screw 9. A disk 17 having its periphery serrated, is secured upon the screw 9 near iis lower end, to facilitate the adjustment oi ihe screw.
The utility and operation ol' 'the device constructed as above described, will be readily understood. By pressing the ends lS oi' the clamping jaws ll and 'l2 the movable jaw (i is released i'rom the screw 9, to permit said jaw to be adjusted with relation to the iixed jaw 2 and further adjustment is el'i'ected by means oi the disk 17.
I would have it understood, that the invention includes all such nuidiiications, and variations in the details of construction, as may be resorted to without departing trom the terms and scope ol' the iollowing Claims.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent7 is In a monkey wrench, the combination of a shank, earrying a iixed jaw, a movable jaw slidable on said shank havin; a lo'. j'iindinallvextending bore and having a slot ex tendine' transversely ot' the shank, said jaw being recessed ai` the inner end ot' said slot, two clamping-jaws pivoted within the slot io extend t nsversely oi the movable jaw and havingv threaded re( es in their inner faces, the l'ree ends oi' seid clamping aws projecting` into the recess in the movable jaw, :i screw exiendinf.;l into the longitudinal bore oL' said movable jaw and engaged by the walls 0l' the threaded rec ss in said clampingl jaws, a spring mounted between said clamping jaws within said slot and engaging both eiampin.;- jaws lo hold the same normally engaged with llle screw, a bracket carried by the shank for supportn ing the inner end ot' said screw,
ln testimony whereot` I ailix my signature in the presence oL` two witnesses.
EUGENE H. VANDERSLICE.
