VENTILATOR FOR WINDOW AND DOOR LIGHTS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE WAMHOEE, Jr., a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful 1mprovemcnt in Ventilators for Window and Door Lights, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to ventilators for window and other glass lights, and has for its object to provide a cheap, simple and efficient form of a ventilator for use on the usual glass light, which can be adjusted or regulated for the amount of air required in the room or apartment, can be closed off entirely when desired, and one which will not interfere with the light in any way, nor present an unsightly appearance to the same.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appcrtains to construct and use iny improved ventilator for window and other glass lights, l will describe the saine more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows an inside elevation of a window frame and sash having myventilator applied thereto, and showing the same in its closed position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical central section through the ventilator on the line 2-2 Fig. 1, and showing the saine in its open position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view showing the manner of holding the ventilator.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in said drawing, 1 represents the usual window frame having the usual sash 2 therein and within the usual plate or glass light 3 of the lower sash is the ventilator 4. This ventilator 4 is formed by placing a series of circular holes 5 within and through the light 3 and arranging them within a circle around a central hole 6 within said light. Fitting within the hole 6 is the bolt 7 which is adapted to carry, turn and hold the circular plate S of the ventilator 4, as hereinafter described, such plate being formed of the usual plate or glass light an d provided with a series of holes 9 extending through the same and arranged in a circle around a central hole 10 therein. The glass plate 8 has its outer edge rounded, as shown at 11, and such plate fits over and around the bolt 7 by its hole 10, adjacent to and alongside of the inner face 12 of the light 3, while within the real' face 13 of the plate is formed the circular seat or recess 14 for the reception of an annular flange 15 formed on the bolt 7 and tting against the inner face 12 of the glass light 3.
Within the hole 6 in the light 3 and fitting around the bolt 7 is the sleeve 16 which has an annular iiange 17 thereon for fitting against the outer face 1S of said light, and engaging with the threaded outer end 19 of the bolt 7 is the nut 20 for fitting against said fiange 17. A threaded cap 21 engages with the threaded end 19 on the bolt 7 and is adapted to press against the nut 20,y
while engaging with the inner threaded end 22 on the bolt 7 is the threaded cap 23 which is adapted to press against the outer face 24 on the plate 8 and is provided with the'serrated face 25 thereon for convenience in rotating or operating the saine.
The use and operation of my improved ventilator 4 is as followsz-The holes 5 in the glass light 3 and the holes 9 in the plate 8 are oi the same number, form and size, and when the parts are assembled in place upon said light and it is desired to allow some air te enter the room or apartment through the ventilator 4, the cap 23 on the inner end 22 of the bolt 7 is turned suflicien tly so that the plate 8 can be moved or revolved sufficiently around on the said bolt through its hole 6 to a position for the holes 9 in said plate to come opposite to and register with the holes 5 in said light 3. After this is done the cap 23 on the bolt 7 will so hold the plate S in position against the inner face l2 of the .light 3 that no air can pass from the outside into the room or apartment except through the holes 5 and 9 in the light 3 and plate 8, respectively. After the room or apartment has been sufficiently ventilated, or it is desired to close the ventilator 4 for any reason, the cap 23 can be turned and with it the bolt 7, so that the plate 8 is turned or revolved with said bolt to a position whereby the material of the said plate between the holes 9 therein will cover up the holes 5 in the light 3.
It will be obvious that the plate can be so set and clamped in position as to permit as large or small a quantity of air to enter the room or apartment through the holes in said plate and light, as is desired, by simply adjusting the plate on the carrying and holding bolt to the proper position, and that when once set and held in any position, no air can enter the room or apartment from between the plate and the light through the holes in said light, as by reason of the smooth and polished surfaces of said light and plate a very tight connection is formed between them.
1t will thus be seen that my improved ventilator is applied directly to the clear or transparent glass plate or light of a window sash or door and the plate being of the saine glass and of the same quality as said light will not prevent light from entering through said glass light and plate and will not mar the appearance of the window or door light in any way whatever. Practical experience with the ventilator has demonstrated its great utility for Ventilating rooms or apartments in which it is used and by reason of its adjustment will give the amount of ventilation required at the proper level, while two or more being used in a store window light will allow for a circulation through the inclosure of said window and so overcome the undesirable sweaty and cloudy lights so generally found. It can he applied to any transparent glass light and Will give a perfect ventilation and circulation through the same at all times to the inclosure, room or apartment and will `not get out of order or need repairing at any time except in case of breakage.
vWhat I claim as my` invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. The combination with a transparent glass Window or door light having air openings through the same, of a transparent glass plate iitting on one side of said light having a series of air openings through the same and having a recess therein, a bolt passing through said light and plate having a flange thereon htting in said recess for permitting the moving of said plate over the face of the light in the opening and closing of said openings without affecting the transparency, and means on each end of said holt for clamping the plate in position against said light and ange.
2. The combination with a transparent glass window or door light having air openings through the same, of a transparent glass plate fitting on one side of said light having air openings through the same and having a recess therein, a sleeve fitting within an opening in said light, a holt passing through said sleeve and plate and having a ange thereon fitting in said recess for permitting the moving of said plate over the tace of the light in the opening and closingof said openings Without affecting the transparency, and means on each end of said bolt and engaging with said sleeve and plate for holding the plate in position.
3. The combination with a transparent glass Window or door light having air openings through the saine, of a transparent glass plate fitting on one side of said light having air openings through the same and having a recess therein, a sleeve fitting within an opening in said light, a bolt passing through said sleeve and plate and having a iange thereon for fitting in said recess and for permitting the moving oi said plate over the face of the light in the opening and closing oi said openings Without aitecting the transparencyy and screw caps on each end of said holt and engaging with said sleeve and plate for holding the plate in position.
