RAILWAY-RAIL FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 22, 1907.
Application filed May 2,1907. Serial No. 371,444.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I', Gnonon E. BLAINE, a citizen of Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact desoription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apperlains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved railway rail fastener.
The object of the invention is to provide a device for securing the rails to ties. without the use of spikes, and which is arranged to prevent wear of the ties.
Another object is to rovide a combined rail fastener and rail brace.
In the accompanying drawings,--Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this improved rail fastener applied, the rail being shown in section; Fig. 2 represents a top plan view thereof, with parts broken out; Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the rails with the fastener applied thereto shown in end elevation; Fig. 4 represents a transverse section of a modified form of fastener applied; and Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of the adjusting holt deter-lied.
In the embodiment illustrated, a If-shaped tie plate is shown the stem or vertical member 2 of \Vllll'll is cut out at :l to form a rail-receiving recess, and said plate has corrugations 4 extending transversely thereof between the spaced members of the stem 2 and on opposite sides thereof to strengthen the plate and prevent bending thereof when heavy loads pass thereover.
This plate is secured in the ties, preferably by lagscrews. as 5 In the form shown in Figs. .1, 2 and 3, theslems 2 have bolt holes 6 extending therethrough, and have mounted thereon laterally-adjustable rail fasteners 10. These fasteners are preferably made II-shaped, as shown, and the opposite sides or legs 11 thereof have longitudinally-arrangeil, ontwardly-flaring slots, as 12, through which and in the holes 6 in the st ems 2 project bolts 13 having tapered heads 14. These bolts when the nuts are screwed thereon force the fasteners forward until the cut-out portions 15 fit over the base of the rail 20. One of the fasteners 10 is provided with a rail brace in the form of an upwardly-extending arm 16, with the free end thereof shaped to fit under the tread oi the rail, as shown in Fig.
The rail fasteners may both he made adjustable, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or only one may he made adjustable and the other fixed, as shown in Fig. 4, and they may he made with or without rail braces as desired. r
1 claim,-
1. A railway rail fastener comprising a T-shaped plate having the upwardly-extending stern thereof out out to form a raila'eceiviug revess, and laterally movable means carried by said stein for engaging the rail and looking it to the plate.
1!. A railway rail fastener comprising a T-sl1apod plate' having the np-wardlyprr)jecling stein thereof out out to form a rail-receiving recess, and a laterulLv-movahle member for engaging the rail, and means for locking said member to the plate.
3. A. railway rail fastener comprising a T-shapod plate having the upwardly-projecting stein thereof out out to form a rail-receiving rccess, a laterally-movahle, rnil'cngaging memhrer mounted to slide on said stem. and means for locking said member to said stem.
4. A railwaprail fastener comprising a T-shapod. plato adapted to be secured to the ties and having the upwardly projecting stem thereof cut out l0 form a rail-rewiring recess and provided with .coll'|l:.::rliol|s evtcuding trans vorsely thereof between the spaced members or the stem on opposite sides thereof. and means connected with said plate for scouring a rail thereto,
5. A railway rail fastener comprising. a T-shapod plate having the upwardly-projcctiug stem thin-col cut out to form a rail-receiving recess, a laterally slidablc hood mounted on said stern :und havinr. means for engaging a rail. and means for moving said hood inwardly.
iii A railway rail fastener comprising a T-shapcd plate having the upwaidly-projecting stem thereof cut out to form :1 rail-receiving recess and an approximately U-shapcd hood sliding on said stem, and moans for moving; said hood inward and looking it in adjusted position.
7. A railway rail fastener comprising a LE-shaped plate having the upwardly-projectiug stem thereof cut out to form a rail-receiving recess and an approximately U-shapcd hood sliding on said stem, means for moving said hood inward and looking it in adjusted position. and an upvs'nrdly-iuclincd arm extending from the inner end of said hood and adapted to engage a rail and form a brave therefor.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of Two suhsvrihing witnesses.
