To all lwhom it may concern:
13e it known that l', Cuantas S. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States` residing at Beverly, in the county of lurlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Lasting-Pincers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tln nin to the accompanying drawings. My invention has for its object an improvement in lasting pinccrs oi the kind whlch are provided with j the means employed for permitting this adjustmentv may be such that in case of breakage of the connection between the hammer and the pincers, repairs may be effected at a minimum of expense.

When breakage of the shank or stud occurs in the construction above referred to, the hammer head or the lower jaw of the )incers recuires to be discarded and re )laced b a new one.
My present invention has for its object to provide lasting pincers which shall combine the advantages of cheap and easy repair in case of breakage of the connecting shank or stud which unites the hammer head to the pincers while at the same time affording an opportunity for the employment oi a means of vertical adjustment of the hammer head by which the adjustment may be effected without lessening the strength of the device.
The vertical adjustment referred to and which is hereinafter more fully set iorth forms the subject of another application for Letters Patent filed by me of A even date herewith.
My invention will be fully understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming appart hereof and the novel features are pointed out and clearly defined in `the claims at the close oi this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a pair oi lasting pincer-s with my invention applied thereto, the hammer head and connected parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a detail in section showing a modification here- 70 ina'iter referred to. Fig. 3 shows a pair oi lasting pincers embodying another modification of my invention, the hammer head and a portion of the pincer jaw being in section. Referring to the drawings, a and b are the upper and under jaws respectively, of a pair of lasting pincers, the under jaw b is provided with a hole or recess d which is threaded for the reception of the threaded connecting stud e. The connecting screw-threaded stud or shank e hts snugly in a threaded hole in the jaw b. The hainni er head f may be of any desired shape and is provided with a hole g which is also screw-threaded for the reception of the lower end of the connecting stud e. The connecting stud e is in its simplest form, preferably threaded throughout its length, as shown Fig. l. The upper surface of the hammer j is iaced off fiat to furnish an extended bearing around the connecting stud e upon the lower surface of the under jaw l1 or upon interposed separating and reinforcing pieces shown at t'. By mak- 90 ing the connecting stud e an independent part not integral with either the pincer jaw or the hammer head, the said part e while insuring a secure connection between the jaw and the hammer head may in case ci breakage, or for any other reason, be readily detached both from the pincer jaw and from the hammer head. As the usual breakage which occurs is the breakage ofthe con nection between the hammer head and the pincer jaw, the employment of an independent connection permits repair to be effected at a minimum oi expense and with very slight loss of time.

nection e and are interposed between the pincer jaw The reinforces are provided with faces corresponding in shape or contour with the face of the lower jaw and the iace oi the hammer head respectively, in order that the proper bearing may be insured between the upper jaw, reinforce and hammer head. The diameter of the reinforce should be as great as may be obtained while at the same time insuring the bearing surface above referred to. The thickness o the reiniorce may be varied but l prefer that they should be comparatively thin in order that a more accurate adjustment to individual requirements may be obtained. One or more ofthe said reinforces may be integral with the connections e ii desired.
Hitherto lasting pincers have been constructed in which the top of the hammer head has been given a conical form and the hole in the pincer jaw ier the reception of the hammer head shank or stud correspondingly counter-sunk. This modiiication increases the bearing suriace between the top of the hammer head and pincet jaw and tends to strengthen the connection.
At Fig. 2 I have shown my independent connection e applied to a pincer jaw and hammer head oi the countersunk and conical form and l have also shown applied thereto a separating reinforce h corresponding to the reinforce L shown in Fig. l, but having a conical form to fit between the counter-sink ot the pincer jaw and the conical top of the hammer head. By the employment oi one or more oi these conical reinforces h the hammer head may be vertically adjusted as required while the full bearing of the hammer head and the jaw and consequent strength of the construction is maintained.
In all iorms oi the invention employing the reinforces they closely surround or encircle the studs or shanks a and are rigidly clamped between the bearing surfaces between which they are interposed so as to support said stud or shank against lateral strain.
At Fig. 3 still another modification of my invention is shown in which the independent connection e is provided with an annular collar or projection j which may be either integral with the connecting stud e as shown Fig. 3, or may be separated therehom, as shown Fig. 4. The part j is formed with a conical upper face and a i'lat lower face, the conical upper iace is received in a coun ter-sink in the face of the pincer jaw and the 'll-at lower face is either directly in contact with the top of the hammer head or there may be interposed between said lower face and the top oi the hammer head one or more i separating reiniorcesi to provide a greater vertical adjustment of the hammer head. ln this construction the independent connection is combined with the increased strength obtained from the conical top and counter sunk construction while at the same tim e vertical adjustment of the hammer head is permitted and A.

By the employment oi my invention the cost of the usual repairs ior lasting pincers oi the class herein reierred to is reduced to a minimum, while by having on hand duplicates oi the inexpensive connecting stud repair oi the pincers wh en breakage occurs may be very quickly effected.
My improvement further in no wise interferes with the employment of the means set iorth by which vertical adjustment o the hammer head may be obtained to suit the requirements oi any individual workman while at the same time retaining at all points of the adjustment the ull strength of the connection between the hammer head and pincers.
What l claim is;
l. ln lasting' pincers, the combination of a jaw, a detachable hammer head, an independent detachable shank screwed into said jaw and connectingl the said jaw and liani1nei'l1ead, said shank having thereon an annular pro Iiection arranged between said jaw and hammer-head, and having' a conical face bearingl solidly against a countersunk face of said jaw, for the purposes and substantially v:is set forth.
2. ln lasting pincers, the combination ol a jaw, a detachable hammer head, an independent detachable shank screwed into said jaw and connectingl the said jaw and hammer head, said shank having thereon an integral annular projection z ang'od between said jaw and hammer head for the pui-pos and substantially as set forth.
Il. 1n lastingl pincers, the combination of a jaw, a detachable hammer head, an independent detachable shank, having an annular projection thereon, said projection having a conical face bearing solidly against a counter-sunk face of said jaw, and reinforces around said shank interposed and rigidly clamped between the said annular projection and the said hammer head, substantially as described.
l. ln lasting pincers, the combination of a jaw, a detachable hammer head, an independent detachable shank connecting said jaw and hammer head, a reinforce around and integral with said shank, said 1 inforce being clamped rigidly between and bearingsolidly against said jaw and hannner-head and having a conical upper face fitting iu a countersink in the jaw, and a flat lower face, said reinforce thus serving to separate said hammer-head and jaw and support the shank, substantially as described.
